United Nigeria Airlines from Accra: Abuja every day, and Lagos

On 10 November 2025, a United Nigeria Airlines jet landed at Accra on the airline's first ever flight outside Nigeria, and the aircraft carried a name every Ghanaian knew: it was named after the late President Jerry John Rawlings. The privately owned carrier from Enugu now flies daily between Accra and Abuja and adds flights to Lagos, making it one of six airlines on the busiest international route out of Ghana. Here is what it flies, when, and what you need to know about Nigeria before you land.

Ghana and Nigeria: rivals, neighbours, family

The two English-speaking giants of West Africa have always been close and competitive at once: jollof rice, music, football and business. The relationship also has hard chapters. In 1969 Ghana's Aliens Compliance Order expelled many Nigerians; in 1983 Nigeria expelled around a million Ghanaians, who carried their belongings home in the striped plastic bags still known as "Ghana Must Go". Today ECOWAS free movement, a shared English, and six airlines on Accra–Lagos tie the two countries closer than ever. A Nigerian airline naming its first Accra aircraft after Jerry Rawlings, the leader who received the returnees of 1983, says something about how far both have come.

Honest tips for this route

  • Small jets, small bags. The Embraer ERJ145 has limited overhead space and a tight hold; check the baggage allowance before you pack heavy.
  • Lagos airport. Murtala Muhammed is busy and confusing; ignore touts, use official taxis or ride-hailing apps, and keep your documents in reach.
  • Lagos traffic. The "go-slow" can turn 20 kilometres into two hours. Plan meetings around it.
  • Cash. Naira notes have been short at times; carry a card and some dollars, and change only at banks or licensed bureaux.
  • Separate tickets. If you combine United Nigeria with another airline, allow plenty of time between flights.
  • Compare six airlines. On Accra–Lagos, fares and timings differ a lot from day to day.

Coming the other way: from Nigeria to Ghana

Nigerians need no visa for Ghana (ECOWAS) and form one of the largest foreign communities in Accra. Beyond business, Ghana's coast offers what Lagos lacks: quiet beaches, the castles, and Kakum's canopy walkway.
