New at Accra in 2025 and 2026

Five airlines have joined the Accra line-up in the past year, most of them strengthening the links with Nigeria and East Africa.

Ghanaian airlines: domestic and regional

Ghana has had no national flag carrier since Ghana Airways collapsed in 2005. Two private airlines carry almost all domestic traffic, and Accra–Kumasi is the busiest route in the country.

Other African airlines

Fifteen African carriers link Accra with the continent. Ethiopian's Addis Ababa hub alone reaches more than 130 destinations, and Lagos is now served by six airlines.

European airlines

Six European airlines fly nonstop from Accra. Ghanaians changing planes in Europe usually need an airport transit visa; our city guides explain the rules for each route.

Announced, postponed and not flying

  • Etihad Airways has announced flights from Abu Dhabi to Accra from 17 March 2027, as part of a wider expansion into Africa.
  • Virgin Atlantic announced a return to Accra from London Heathrow for May 2025, then postponed it. As of October 2026, only British Airways flies nonstop between Accra and London.
  • Ghana's own national airline has been promised by several governments. Until it flies, domestic and regional travel depends on private airlines.

Alliances: why they matter for connections

If both flights of your journey are with airlines of the same alliance, you can usually book one ticket, check your bags through to the end, and collect miles on one account. If you miss a connection, the airline must rebook you.

Terminals and practical tips

  • Terminal 3 handles all regional, international and long-haul flights.
  • Terminal 2 handles domestic flights with Africa World Airlines, Passion Air and Gianair. Allow time to move between terminals if you connect.
  • Terminal 1 is no longer used for scheduled flights and is being redeveloped for private aviation.
  • Check-in: arrive three hours before international departures, especially in December and on the evening flights to Europe.
  • Baggage: allowances differ sharply between airlines; check before you pack, as excess charges on African routes can be high.
  • Separate tickets: on two separate bookings you collect and re-check your bags yourself, and a late first flight is your risk, not the airline's.
  • Visas: check the entry and transit rules for every country on your route. Our city guides and the embassies page list them.
