Flights from Accra to Cairo: the pyramids are six hours away

In 1957 Kwame Nkrumah married Fathia Rizk, a young woman from Cairo, the day before she first set foot in Ghana. She became Ghana's first lady, and the friendship between Nkrumah and Egypt's president Nasser shaped African politics for a decade. Today EgyptAir flies nonstop from Accra to Cairo four times a week, and the city is the gateway to the pyramids, the new Grand Egyptian Museum, the mosques of Islamic Cairo and the temples of Luxor. Here are the flights, the visa rule that catches Ghanaians out, and Cairo as it really is: magnificent, chaotic and full of touts.

Why EgyptAir matters

EgyptAir's Cairo hub also connects Ghanaians onward to Jeddah and Medina for Umrah, to the Gulf, to Europe and to Asia. Remember that changing planes in Cairo without entering Egypt needs no visa, but stopping over does.

Say it in Egyptian Arabic

English is spoken in hotels and at the big sights. Egyptian Arabic, the most widely understood Arabic dialect thanks to Egyptian film, goes much further.

  • Salaam alaykum: peace be upon you, hello.
  • Shukran: thank you.
  • La', shukran: no, thank you. The most useful phrase at the pyramids.
  • Bikam?: how much?
  • Ghali awi!: very expensive! The start of every bargaining.
  • Yalla: let's go, hurry up.

Egypt in brief, and the visa

Key facts

  • Capital: Cairo, the largest city in the Arab world and in Africa's top three, with over 20 million people in the metropolitan area. A New Administrative Capital is being built in the desert to the east.
  • Independence: formally from Britain in 1922; the monarchy ended with the 1952 revolution, and Egypt became a republic in 1953.
  • Currency: Egyptian pound (EGP). Its value fell sharply in 2024; check the converter on the day, and change only at banks or official bureaux.
  • Language: Arabic.
  • Time: UTC+2 in winter, UTC+3 in summer: two or three hours ahead of Ghana.
  • Entry for Ghanaians: a visa is needed in advance, applied for at the Egyptian Embassy in Accra. Egypt's e-visa and visa on arrival are for other nationalities. Check the current rules before booking.
  • Entry for UK, EU and US passports: an e-visa online before travel, or a visa on arrival at the airport.
  • Yellow fever: a certificate may be required for travellers arriving from Ghana. Carry your card.

Fathia, Nasser and Nkrumah

Kwame Nkrumah wanted a wife from North Africa, a living link between the Arab north and Black Africa. In December 1957 he married Fathia Halim Rizk, a Coptic Christian from Cairo, with President Gamal Abdel Nasser's encouragement. She arrived in Accra not speaking English and became Ghana's first lady, raised three children there, and fled with them to Cairo when Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966. After her death in 2007 she was buried beside him at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra.

Nasser and Nkrumah were allies in the radical "Casablanca Group" of African states before the founding of the OAU in 1963. Both believed Africa's freedom was one struggle, from the Mediterranean to the Cape.

Cairo: what to see

  • The pyramids of GizaThe last surviving wonder of the ancient world, right on the edge of the city. Go at opening time, before the heat and the coaches.
  • The Grand Egyptian MuseumThe world's largest museum of one civilisation, next to the pyramids, with Tutankhamun's treasures shown together for the first time. Book tickets online.
  • Islamic CairoThe city of a thousand minarets: Al-Azhar, one of the oldest universities in the world, the Citadel with the Muhammad Ali Mosque, and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar.
  • The NileA felucca sailboat at sunset, or the Cairo Tower on Gezira island for the best view of the city.
  • Downtown and TahrirThe 19th-century "Paris on the Nile", Tahrir Square of the 2011 revolution, and the old Egyptian Museum with its royal mummies.
  • Coptic Cairo and SaqqaraThe old Christian quarter, Fathia Nkrumah's community, with its Hanging Church; and Saqqara's step pyramid, older than Giza.

  • Aswan and Abu SimbelNubian villages, the High Dam, and the colossal temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel. A Nile cruise links Aswan and Luxor.

Arriving at Cairo International Airport

  • The airport: Cairo International (CAI), about 20 kilometres north-east of the centre. EgyptAir uses Terminal 3.
  • Immigration: have your visa, return ticket and hotel address ready.
  • Into town: pre-booked transfers and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem are the easiest and cheapest; ignore drivers touting inside the terminal.
  • Traffic: Cairo's traffic is legendary. Allow an hour to the centre, more at rush hour, and more again to Giza.
  • Sphinx Airport: a newer airport west of the city, near Giza, handles some domestic and international flights. Check which one you use.

Honest tips for this route

  • Touts at the pyramids. Camel and horse men, "free" photos, self-appointed guides: they are everywhere at Giza. Agree any price in advance, or say la', shukran and walk on. A licensed guide saves a lot of stress.
  • Baksheesh. Small tips are expected for almost everything: toilets, guards who show you a tomb, porters. Carry small notes.
  • Visa first. Ghanaians cannot rely on a visa on arrival. Get the visa in Accra before you fly.
  • Dress. Cover shoulders and knees, especially in mosques and in Islamic Cairo. Women may face unwanted attention; going with a guide or group helps.
  • The heat. From June to September, Cairo and especially Luxor pass 40 °C. October to April is the best time.
  • Water and food. Drink bottled water. Street food is delicious; choose busy stalls.
