Flights from Accra to Jeddah: the pilgrims' route to Mecca

Every year thousands of Ghanaian Muslims save for years to make the journey of their lives: Umrah at any time of year, and Hajj in the holy month. Almost all of them land in Jeddah, the Red Sea port that has been the gateway to Mecca for fourteen centuries. Outside the Hajj charter season there is no nonstop flight from Accra, but one change in Addis Ababa, Cairo or the Gulf gets you there within a day. Here are the routes, the visa and vaccine rules, the new fast train to Mecca and Medina, and the honest warnings about agents who take pilgrims' money and disappear.

Hajj charters

During the Hajj season, special charter flights carry Ghana's official pilgrims nonstop from Accra, and in some years from Tamale, to Jeddah or Medina. These seats are not sold to the public: they come with the official Hajj package. For Umrah during the rest of the year, use the scheduled routes above, ideally booked to Jeddah and back from Medina, or the other way round, on one ticket.

Say it in Arabic

Many Ghanaian pilgrims already know these from the mosque. Hotel and shop staff in Jeddah and Mecca often also speak English, Urdu or Hausa.

  • As-salamu alaykum: peace be upon you. The answer is Wa alaykum as-salam.
  • Shukran: thank you.
  • Min fadlak (to a man) / Min fadlik (to a woman): please.
  • Bikam?: how much?
  • Insha'Allah: God willing. You will hear it with every plan.
  • Ma'a as-salama: goodbye.

Saudi Arabia in brief

Key facts

  • Capital: Riyadh. Jeddah is the second city and the gateway to Mecca, about 80 kilometres inland.
  • Currency: Saudi riyal (SAR), pegged to the US dollar. Cards work almost everywhere.
  • Language: Arabic.
  • Time: Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3, three hours ahead of Ghana.
  • Entry for Ghanaians: a visa is required. For Umrah, apply for an Umrah visa through Saudi Arabia's official Nusuk platform or a licensed agent. Hajj is possible only through Ghana's official Hajj arrangements and the national quota, never on a tourist or Umrah visa.
  • Entry for UK, EU and US passports: Saudi Arabia's tourist e-visa, which also allows Umrah outside the Hajj season.
  • Vaccines: a meningitis ACWY vaccination certificate is required for Umrah and Hajj pilgrims, and a yellow fever certificate for travellers coming from Ghana.
  • Mecca and Medina: only Muslims may enter Mecca. In Medina, the area around the Prophet's Mosque is likewise for Muslims only.

Umrah and Hajj: the honest version

Hardly a Hajj season passes without news of Ghanaian pilgrims stranded in Accra, their money gone, or stuck in Saudi Arabia without the services they paid for. The journey is sacred; the business around it is not always clean.

  • Hajj only through the official channel. Ghana's Hajj places are limited by a Saudi quota and allocated through the official national Hajj arrangements. Anyone offering a "guaranteed" Hajj place outside that system is selling something they cannot deliver.
  • Umrah through licensed agents or Nusuk. Check that your agent is licensed, ask for the hotel names and distances from the Haram in writing, and never hand over cash without a receipt.
  • Book the vaccines early. Meningitis ACWY at least ten days before travel, and carry the certificate with your yellow fever card.
  • The heat is dangerous. Summer temperatures in Mecca pass 45 °C. Many deaths during Hajj are from heat. Drink water constantly, use an umbrella, and rest between rites.
  • Women travellers. Since 2021, women can perform Umrah without a male guardian (mahram) when travelling with an approved group. Check the current rules with your agent.
  • Travel between the holy cities. The Haramain high-speed railway links Jeddah, Mecca and Medina in comfort: about 35 minutes from Jeddah to Mecca and around two hours to Medina.

Ghana's own Muslim heritage

Islam reached what is now northern Ghana with traders and scholars from the Sahel centuries before the first European ships arrived on the coast. The mud mosques of the north, built in the Sudano-Sahelian style, are among the oldest buildings in the country; Larabanga's is often said to date back to the 15th century. Today around a fifth of Ghanaians are Muslim, and the National Mosque in Kawukudi, Accra, is one of the largest in West Africa.

Jeddah itself: what to see

Many pilgrims see nothing of Jeddah but the airport. A day or two here is worth it.

  • Al-BaladThe old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: coral-stone tower houses with carved wooden balconies, and the souks where pilgrims have traded for centuries.
  • The CornicheKilometres of Red Sea waterfront, best in the evening when the heat breaks.
  • Al-Rahma MosqueThe "floating mosque", built on piles over the sea.
  • King Fahd's FountainOne of the tallest fountains in the world, lit up at night.
  • The Red Sea reefsSome of the best diving and snorkelling in the world, just north and south of the city.
  • MedinaThe Prophet's Mosque and the second holy city, about two hours by high-speed train.

Arriving at King Abdulaziz International Airport

  • The airport: King Abdulaziz International (JED), north of the city. Most international airlines use the large new Terminal 1; during Hajj, pilgrim flights use the separate Hajj Terminal.
  • Immigration: have your visa, vaccination certificates, return ticket and hotel booking ready. Queues at peak pilgrimage times can be very long.
  • To Mecca and Medina: the Haramain high-speed railway has a station at the airport. Buy tickets in advance, especially during Ramadan and Hajj.
  • Into Jeddah: official taxis and ride-hailing apps; agree prices or use the meter.

Honest tips for this route

  • Avoid fake agents. If the price sounds too good, or the agent refuses to name the hotel, walk away.
  • Dress modestly. Long trousers or skirts and covered shoulders in public, for men and women. In the holy cities, follow the rules for ihram and mosque dress.
  • No alcohol, no exceptions. It is banned throughout Saudi Arabia. Do not carry it, even in your luggage.
  • Prayer times. Shops close briefly for each of the five daily prayers. Plan your shopping around them.
  • Ramadan. Umrah during Ramadan is especially blessed and especially crowded. Hotel prices near the Haram multiply.
  • Medicines. Some medicines available in Ghana are controlled in Saudi Arabia. Carry prescriptions in their original packaging, with a doctor's letter.

Coming the other way: from Saudi Arabia to Ghana

Saudi visitors to Ghana should check the Ghana visa rules before travel. Visitors from the Gulf often come for business. Northern Ghana's mud mosques are a remarkable discovery for Muslim visitors, and the coast offers a very different side of Ghana.
