Three times a week a RwandAir Boeing leaves Accra International Airport at lunchtime and lands in Kigali in the evening. It is the only direct link between Ghana and Rwanda, a country that has rebuilt itself since 1994 into one of the cleanest, most organised and most visited small nations in Africa. Kigali is also a quiet side door to East Africa: Entebbe, Nairobi, Zanzibar, Lusaka and Johannesburg are all a short hop away. Here is what flies, when, and what you should know before booking.
RwandAir started in 2002 as Rwandair Express, a tiny regional carrier, and grew with the country. Today it is Rwanda's state-owned flag carrier, flying from Kigali across East, Central, Southern and West Africa and on to London, Paris, Brussels and Dubai. It is small compared with Ethiopian or Kenya Airways, but it is growing fast: four more Airbus A330s are due by the end of 2026, and the airline plans to double its fleet within five years.

Why six hours for a five-hour distance?
Rwanda and the DR Congo are locked in a long-running dispute over the conflict in eastern Congo. RwandAir does not fly to Congo and routes around its airspace, so flights to West Africa take a longer path. That is also why RwandAir has dropped Kinshasa, Brazzaville, Cotonou and Abuja in recent years.

Rwanda is small, green and steep, the "land of a thousand hills". Its recent history cannot be skipped: in 1994, in about one hundred days, more than half a million people, most of them Tutsi, were murdered in the genocide. Every visitor should go to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, and most come away understanding the country very differently. Rwanda today is safe, orderly and clean, with mountain gorillas, rainforest chimpanzees, a savannah park with the Big Five and a long lakeshore on Lake Kivu.

Uganda is the obvious next stop from Kigali: Kampala and the Equator, gorilla treks, the national parks and transfers from Entebbe airport. Entrance fees are included in the tour price; tips are not included but always welcome.
The flight from Kigali lands in Accra around midday on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. That leaves the whole afternoon for the capital. The next days can take you west to the castles at Cape Coast and Elmina and the canopy walk at Kakum, which visitors who know Nyungwe will find interesting to compare.
