Four evenings a week an ITA Airways Airbus lands in Accra from Rome and flies back overnight. ITA is Italy's young flag carrier, the successor to the famous Alitalia, and its Accra route serves the tens of thousands of Ghanaians who live and work in Italy, many of them in the industrial towns of the north. Here is what flies, when, what "seasonal" means for this route, and the visa rules that matter.
Alitalia flew for Italy from 1946 until it finally ran out of money in 2021. ITA Airways, Italia Trasporto Aereo, took over on 15 October 2021 with a smaller fleet and a fresh start. Since 2025 the German Lufthansa Group has owned a large stake in ITA, and the airline has been moving from SkyTeam into Lufthansa's Star Alliance world. Its hub is Rome Fiumicino, the airport named after Leonardo da Vinci.

ITA Airways describes its Rome–Accra route as a seasonal connection. It was flying through summer and into October 2026, but the winter schedule may differ or pause. English is spoken in tourist areas, but far less in the towns of the north where many Ghanaians live. A little Italian goes a long way.

Today tens of thousands of Ghanaians live in Italy, many in the north around Brescia, Vicenza, Verona and Modena, working in factories and agriculture. ITA lands in Accra at about 19:15 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Italian visitors need a visa for Ghana. Start with Accra, then go west to the castles at Cape Coast and Elmina and the canopy walk at Kakum.
