Flights from Accra to Libreville: Gabon, Africa's last great rainforest

Libreville means "free town", and like Freetown in Sierra Leone it was founded by Africans freed from a captured slave ship. Today it is the small, expensive, French-speaking capital of a country that is almost nine-tenths forest, where hippos walk on beaches, elephants cross the sand at Loango, and western lowland gorillas live in parks that see only a few thousand visitors a year. No airline flies nonstop from Accra, but ASKY connects the two daily through Lomé. Here are the routes, the visa rules, and Gabon without the brochure gloss.

The best one-stop routes from Accra

Flight times are approximate, without the connection. Gabon is one hour ahead of Ghana all year.

Which one to pick

The obvious choice: ASKY via Lomé, which flies to Libreville daily, with a stop where Ghanaians need no visa. The alternative: Air Côte d'Ivoire via Abidjan, also with a visa-free stop. Check the connection times on your date. The Casablanca and Addis routes are long detours and only worth it on a very good fare. Book Accra to Libreville on one ticket.

Say it in French

Gabon is thoroughly French-speaking, more so than most of West Africa. English is rare outside the big hotels.

  • Bonjour / Bonsoir: good day / good evening. Always greet before you ask anything.
  • Merci / Merci beaucoup: thank you / thank you very much.
  • S'il vous plaît: please.
  • C'est combien?: how much is it?
  • Où est…?: where is…?
  • Je ne parle pas bien français: I don't speak French well. Said with a smile, it opens doors.

Gabon in brief

Key facts

  • Capital: Libreville, home to almost half of the country's people.
  • Independence: 17 August 1960, from France.
  • Politics: the Bongo family ruled for 56 years until the military takeover of August 2023; General Brice Oligui Nguema was elected president in April 2025.
  • Currency: Central African CFA franc (XAF). Not interchangeable with the West African CFA franc used in Togo or Côte d'Ivoire, even though both are pegged to the euro at the same rate.
  • Languages: French (official); Fang, Myene, Punu and many other national languages.
  • Time: West Africa Time, UTC+1, one hour ahead of Ghana.
  • Entry for Ghanaians: Gabon is not in ECOWAS, so a visa is needed, applied for through Gabon's official e-visa system or the Gabonese Embassy. Check the current procedure before booking.
  • Entry for UK, EU and US passports: check the current rules on Gabon's official e-visa portal; Gabon has changed its visa policy several times in recent years.
  • Yellow fever: a certificate is required. Carry your card with your passport.

Free town and the forest doctor

In 1846 a French naval patrol captured the Brazilian slave ship Elizabeth off the Loango coast. Three years later the freed captives were settled on the Gabon estuary, and the French named the place Libreville. The story is the same as Freetown's in Sierra Leone and close to Monrovia's in Liberia: West Africa's coast has three capitals born from the end of the slave trade.

Inland, on the Ogooué river at Lambaréné, the German-born doctor and theologian Albert Schweitzer founded his hospital in 1913. He worked there for most of the next fifty years and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952. His hospital still runs, and his house is a museum. Schweitzer is a complicated figure today, admired for his work and criticised for his paternalism, and the museum at Lambaréné shows both sides.

Parks and gorillas: why people come to Gabon

In 2002 Gabon created thirteen national parks at a stroke, covering about a tenth of the country. They protect some of the last intact rainforest in Africa, forest elephants, mandrills and western lowland gorillas. Tourism here is small-scale, expensive and logistically demanding, and that is exactly why the parks still feel wild.

  • Loango National ParkWhere the forest meets the Atlantic: elephants and buffalo on the beach, the famous "surfing hippos", and whales offshore from July to September.
  • Lopé National ParkA UNESCO World Heritage Site of forest and savannah, with huge mandrill troops. Reached by the Transgabonais railway from Libreville.
  • Ivindo National ParkWaterfalls, deep forest and the Langoué clearing, where elephants and gorillas gather. Remote and hard to reach.
  • Pongara and AkandaThe parks closest to Libreville: mangroves, birds, and leatherback turtles nesting on Pongara's beaches from November to March.
  • LambarénéAlbert Schweitzer's hospital and museum on the Ogooué, a few hours' drive from Libreville.
  • Libreville itselfThe seafront, the Saint-Michel church with its carved columns, and the markets of Mont-Bouët.

A multi-day expedition through Gabon's rainforest parks, including gorilla tracking with local guides and trackers. Trips like this need planning months ahead, as permits and lodges are limited. Entrance fees are included in the tour price; tips are not included but always welcome.

Ghana's national parks, for comparison

Arriving at Léon Mba International Airport

  • The airport: Léon Mba International (LBV), on the northern edge of the city by the sea, a short drive from the centre.
  • Immigration: have your visa or e-visa approval, yellow fever card, return ticket and hotel address ready.
  • Into town: hotel pickups are the easiest option. Red-and-white taxis are shared and fares are negotiated; agree the price first.
  • Onward: domestic flights to Port-Gentil and Franceville, or the Transgabonais train from Owendo station towards Lopé and Franceville.

Honest tips for this route

  • Gabon is expensive. Libreville is one of the costliest cities in Africa. Hotels, food and park trips cost far more than in Ghana. Budget honestly.
  • Visa first. Gabon is not ECOWAS. Ghanaians used to visa-free West Africa get caught out at check-in in Accra.
  • Two CFA francs. West African CFA notes from Lomé or Abidjan are not accepted in Gabon. Change or withdraw locally.
  • The parks need planning. Loango, Lopé and Ivindo are not day trips. Book lodges, transport and guides well in advance.
  • Police checks. Carry your passport at all times. Do not photograph government buildings, the presidential palace or the military.
  • Rain. The long dry season runs from about June to September, the best time for most parks. The rest of the year is wet.

Coming the other way: from Gabon to Ghana

Gabonese visiting Ghana should check the Ghana visa rules before travel. Visitors from Libreville will find Ghana cheaper, English-speaking and easy to travel independently, with its own rainforest canopy at Kakum and its own elephants at Mole.

Airport pickup with free internet, private vehicle hire and a three-destination tour, booked before you land. Entrance fees are included in the tour price; tips are not included but always welcome.
