Flights from Accra to New Delhi: India with one change

Every week, Ghanaians fly to India for hip replacements, heart surgery and cancer treatment, for business, for study, and sometimes simply to see the Taj Mahal. India and Ghana go back a long way: Kwame Nkrumah and Jawaharlal Nehru stood together at the birth of the Non-Aligned Movement, and the presidential palace in Accra was built with Indian money. No airline flies nonstop from Accra to India, but one change in Addis Ababa, Dubai or Doha gets you to Delhi overnight. Here are the routes, the e-Visa, the yellow fever rule that catches people out, and India as it is.

The best one-stop routes from Accra

Flight times are approximate, without the connection. India is five and a half hours ahead of Ghana all year. All four hubs below need no transit visa if you stay airside.

Which one to pick

Usually best: Ethiopian via Addis Ababa, the most direct line on the map and up to three departures a day from Accra from December 2026. Most comfortable connections: Emirates via Dubai or Qatar via Doha, with several onward flights a day to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru. For hospitals in Chennai or Hyderabad, book straight to that city rather than via Delhi.

Say it in Hindi

English is widely spoken in hospitals, hotels and business. A few words of Hindi still go a long way in Delhi.

  • Namaste: hello, with palms pressed together.
  • Dhanyavaad / Shukriya: thank you.
  • Kitne ka hai?: how much is it?
  • Haan / Nahin: yes / no.
  • Theek hai: okay, fine. You will hear it constantly.
  • Bas: enough, stop. Useful with persistent sellers.

India in brief

Key facts

  • Capital: New Delhi. Mumbai is the commercial capital.
  • Independence: 15 August 1947, from Britain, ten years before Ghana.
  • Currency: Indian rupee (INR). Cards and the mobile payment system UPI are everywhere in cities; carry some cash for taxis and small shops.
  • Languages: Hindi and English are used by the central government, alongside 21 other recognised languages.
  • Time: India Standard Time, UTC+5:30, five and a half hours ahead of Ghana.
  • Entry for Ghanaians: India's e-Visa is open to Ghanaian passport holders, as tourist, business, medical and medical attendant e-Visas. Apply only on the official Indian government e-Visa website, at least a few days before travel.
  • Entry for UK, EU and US passports: the same official e-Visa system.
  • Yellow fever: essential. India requires a yellow fever certificate from travellers arriving from Ghana. Without it you can be held in quarantine on arrival.
  • Plugs: mostly the round two- and three-pin types C, D and M. Bring an adapter.

Medical travel to India: the honest version

India's big private hospital groups treat thousands of West African patients every year, often for a fraction of the cost in Europe, and many have international patient desks that arrange visas, airport pickups and interpreters. For many Ghanaian families, a trip to Delhi, Gurugram, Chennai or Hyderabad has saved a life. It still pays to be careful.

  • Check the hospital, not the agent. Look for national (NABH) or international (JCI) accreditation, and contact the hospital's international desk directly. Many "facilitators" in Accra add large fees or steer patients to whoever pays them most.
  • Get the estimate in writing. Ask for a written treatment plan and cost estimate before you fly, and what happens if the stay runs longer.
  • Use the right visa. The patient needs a medical e-Visa, and up to two companions need medical attendant e-Visas.
  • Bring your records. Scans, lab results and a referral letter from your doctor in Ghana, on paper and on a USB stick.
  • Plan the follow-up. Ask how aftercare will work once you are back in Ghana, and who your doctor at home should contact.

Nkrumah and Nehru: an old friendship

India's independence in 1947 was watched closely in the Gold Coast, and Gandhi's non-violent resistance shaped Nkrumah's "Positive Action" campaign of 1950. After 1957, Nkrumah and Nehru became partners in the effort to keep newly independent nations out of the Cold War; both were among the leaders at the founding conference of the Non-Aligned Movement in Belgrade in 1961. The friendship continues in concrete form: Jubilee House, Ghana's presidential palace, was built with an Indian government credit, and the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT in Accra was founded with Indian support. It has not always been smooth. A statue of Gandhi at the University of Ghana was removed in 2018 after protests over his early writings on Africans in South Africa.

Delhi and beyond: what to see

  • Old Delhi and the Red FortThe Mughal fortress, the Jama Masjid, and the overwhelming lanes of Chandni Chowk.
  • Humayun's TombThe garden tomb that inspired the Taj Mahal, quieter and often more beautiful in the early morning.
  • Qutub MinarThe 12th-century victory tower, the oldest of Delhi's great monuments.
  • India Gate and Raj GhatThe war memorial on the ceremonial avenue, and the simple memorial where Gandhi was cremated.
  • The Taj Mahal, AgraAbout two hours by fast train. Closed on Fridays; go at sunrise.
  • JaipurThe "pink city" of Rajasthan, with the Amber Fort, a long day trip or overnight from Delhi.

Arriving at Indira Gandhi International Airport

  • The airport: Indira Gandhi International (DEL), about 16 kilometres south-west of central Delhi. Most international flights use Terminal 3.
  • Immigration: have your e-Visa printout, yellow fever certificate, return ticket and hotel or hospital address ready.
  • Into town: the Airport Express metro line runs from Terminal 3 to New Delhi railway station in about 20 minutes. Prepaid taxi counters and ride-hailing apps are reliable; ignore drivers who approach you inside the terminal.
  • Hospital pickups: most big hospitals offer airport pickup for international patients. Arrange it before you fly.

Honest tips for this route

  • Air pollution. From late October to January, Delhi's air is among the worst in the world. People with asthma or heart and lung problems should take it seriously, and patients should ask their hospital for advice.
  • Yellow fever card. Coming from Ghana, it is checked. No card can mean quarantine.
  • Only official e-Visa websites. Many look-alike sites charge extra. The real one is run by the Indian government.
  • Food and water. Drink bottled or filtered water, and eat freshly cooked food. "Delhi belly" is real.
  • Touts and scams. At New Delhi railway station especially, people will tell you your train is cancelled or the office is closed. It almost never is.
  • The heat. April to June is extremely hot, often above 40 °C. October to March is the comfortable season, pollution aside.

Coming the other way: from India to Ghana

Indian visitors to Ghana should check the Ghana visa rules before travel. Ghana has a long-established Indian business community, and many visitors come for trade. Beyond business, the coast, the castles and Kakum are all within reach of Accra.
