Cotonou from Accra: Vodun, kings and the Door of No Return, two borders away

Benin is Ghana's neighbour but one: past Togo, along the same Atlantic coast, lies the old kingdom of Dahomey, birthplace of Vodun, home of the women soldiers the French called Amazons, and of Ouidah, one of the busiest slave ports in all of Africa. Cotonou, its economic capital, is a short flight from Accra via Lomé, or a long, lively day on the coastal road. Ghanaians need no visa. Here is how to get there, and why it is worth it.

The flight saves time but rarely money. The road is the classic West African journey, but border formalities at Aflao and Hillacondji can be slow, especially on weekends and at holidays. Travel by day, keep your passport and yellow fever card at hand, and change only small amounts at the borders.

A few words for Benin

  • Bonjour / Merci (French): hello / thank you.
  • Awanou (Fon): thank you.
  • Kudo (Fon): a greeting you will hear in the south.

Southern Benin has the same rhythm of seasons as coastal Ghana: rains from about April to July and again around October, and a dry season from November to March.

Entry and arrival

  • No visa for Ghanaians: as ECOWAS citizens, Ghanaians can stay up to 90 days with a valid passport or ECOWAS travel document.
  • Yellow fever: carry your vaccination card; it is checked at the airport and at land borders.
  • Into town: the airport is close to central Cotonou. Taxis and the ubiquitous moto-taxis, the "zémidjans", wait outside. Agree the fare first.
  • Money: CFA francs are easy to get from ATMs in Cotonou. The same notes work in Togo on the way back.

Benin and Ghana: shared stories

  • The slave trade: Ouidah's Door of No Return and Ghana's castles at Cape Coast and Elmina are two ends of the same coast and the same history.
  • Returnees from Brazil: freed Africans who came back from Brazil settled in Ouidah, Porto-Novo and Lagos, where they are called Agudas, and in Accra, where the Tabom people built Brazil House in Jamestown.
  • Looted heritage: the return of the Abomey treasures from France in 2021 is part of the same debate that concerns Ghanaian objects held in European museums.

Honest tips for Benin

  • The far north: armed groups have attacked areas along Benin's northern borders, including around the Pendjari and W national parks. Check current travel advice before going north; the south is where most visitors go.
  • Vodun with respect: ask before photographing ceremonies, shrines and priests. Some places charge a fee for photographs.
  • Zémidjans: motorbike taxis are everywhere and cheap. Insist on a helmet and agree the fare first.
  • Mind the clock: Benin is one hour ahead of Ghana. Check times carefully when planning connections.
  • French helps: English is not widely spoken. A few words of French make everything easier.
  • Vodun Day crowds: around 10 January, Ouidah fills up. Book accommodation early.
