West Africa from Accra: the region Ghana flies to most

More flights leave Accra for West Africa than for any other part of the world. Lagos alone sees well over thirty a week, and the coastal capitals from Abidjan to Freetown are an hour or two away. For years, flying between neighbours meant going via Paris or Casablanca. Today ASKY's hub in Lomé, the Nigerian carriers, Air Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana's own Africa World Airlines link the region directly. Here is every route from Accra, country by country, with the airlines, the visa rules, the money and the road alternatives.

Two clocks in West Africa

Ghana and most of West Africa are on GMT all year. Nigeria, Benin and Niger are one hour ahead. That is why a flight from Lagos at 08:00 lands in Accra at 08:05, and why the return looks like it takes two hours.

Nigeria: Accra's busiest international route

Ghana and Nigeria compete over everything, from football to jollof rice, and could not do without each other. Lagos, Africa's largest city, is an hour from Accra. Three airlines fly it: Ghana's Africa World Airlines, Nigeria's largest carrier Air Peace, and the punctual Ibom Air, which since 2026 also flies nonstop to Uyo. AWA and Ibom Air also serve Abuja.

Côte d'Ivoire: the Akan neighbour

By road, Accra–Abidjan is a long day with the Elubo border crossing. By air it is an hour, with no time change. Air Côte d'Ivoire flies it several times a week, and Emirates flies it daily on a Boeing 777, as part of its Dubai route. On the Ivorian side live Akan peoples, the Nzema, Agni, Abron and Baoulé, close to Ghana's own in language and custom.

Tours in Côte d'Ivoire: Abidjan, Grand-Bassam and the lagoons. Entrance fees are included in the tour price; tips are not included but always welcome.

Togo and Benin: the Lomé hub and the slave coast

Lomé is only 170 kilometres east of Accra, and it is the key to West African flying: ASKY's hub, from which some 30 African cities are reached. From Accra there are about fourteen to fifteen flights a week, with ASKY and, on a widebody, with Brussels Airlines. Benin lies just beyond Togo: Cotonou, Ouidah's Door of No Return and the royal palaces of Abomey. Southern Togo and Ghana's Volta Region share the same Ewe language, and much of the same German colonial history.

Liberia and Sierra Leone: the Atlantic return

Monrovia and Freetown were both founded as homes for freed Africans returning across the Atlantic, Liberia by the American Colonization Society, Sierra Leone by the British. Today both are better served from Accra than ever: Monrovia by five airlines, led by ASKY's daily flight, and Freetown by ASKY, Air Peace and Kenya Airways. Several of these flights are chains along the coast, so Accra is a natural stepping stone.

The Gambia and Senegal: the far west

ASKY flies from Accra to Banjul five times a week, via Freetown, on the same aircraft. For Dakar there is no direct flight from Accra; the quickest way is one stop via Lomé or Abidjan, or overland from Banjul. Gorée Island, Kunta Kinteh Island and the River Gambia tell the same Atlantic story as Ghana's castles, from the other end of the coast.

Guinea: the highlands of the Fouta Djallon

There is no direct flight from Accra to Conakry. ASKY flies there daily from Lomé, via Bamako, and Air Côte d'Ivoire connects via Abidjan. Guinea is one of the least-visited countries on the coast, and one of the most beautiful: the Fouta Djallon highlands where the Niger, Senegal and Gambia rivers rise, the waterfalls, and the Îles de Los off Conakry.

Burkina Faso and the Sahel: the honest picture

Ouagadougou is close to Ghana. By road it is reached through Paga or Hamile in the Upper East and Upper West, but there is no direct flight from Accra; ASKY and Air Côte d'Ivoire connect via Lomé or Abidjan. In January 2025 Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger left ECOWAS to form their own Alliance of Sahel States. So far free movement for ECOWAS citizens has largely continued, but rules can change, so check before you travel. Most Western governments advise against all or most travel to Mali and Niger and much of Burkina Faso, and that usually voids travel insurance.

Fly or drive? The road alternatives

For Ghanaians and other ECOWAS citizens, no visa is needed for the neighbours, and the road is often cheaper than the flight. But borders take time, and West African highways are dangerous at night.

Honest tips for flying West Africa

  • Book connections on one ticket. Regional flights often leave late. On one booking, the airline must rebook you if you miss a connection in Lomé or Abidjan; on separate tickets, you are on your own.
  • Carry your yellow fever card. It is checked on arrival across the region, and some countries will not let you in without it.
  • Cash. Cedis are hard to change outside the border areas. The CFA franc works in eight countries; Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Guinea each have their own currency.
  • Schedules move. West African airlines change times and days at short notice. Check your flight a day before.
  • December is peak. The Christmas and diaspora season fills every regional flight. Book early.
  • Watch the travel advice. Most of the coast is calm, but parts of the Sahel are not. Check official advice and your insurance before you book.

For visitors from the region, Ghana is close, English-speaking, visa-free for ECOWAS citizens and calm. Start with Accra, then go west to the castles at Cape Coast and Elmina, or north to Kumasi and the Asante kingdom.
