Lusaka from Accra: Zambia, the Smoke That Thunders and the real wild
Zambia is one of Africa's great safari countries, and one of its least crowded: walking safaris along the Luangwa,
canoe trips on the Zambezi, the largest bat migration on earth, and on its southern border the thundering curtain of
Victoria Falls. Lusaka, the capital, is a busy, practical city and the gateway to all of it. From Accra there is no
nonstop flight, but good one-stop routes run through East and Southern Africa. Here is how to get there, and where
to go next.

If Victoria Falls is your main goal, compare a ticket to Livingstone with one to Lusaka. The Lusaka–Livingstone
road is about 470 km, a full day's drive. Check every leg on the airline's own website before you buy.
Local time in both cities, the weather at this moment, and a converter between cedis, kwacha and the main currencies.
Say it in Nyanja and Bemba
Muli bwanji? (Nyanja): how are you? The answer is Bwino, fine.
Zikomo (Nyanja): thank you, heard all over Lusaka.
Natotela (Bemba): thank you, in the north and the Copperbelt.
Lusaka sits at about 1,280 metres. May to August is cool and dry, with chilly nights; September to November is hot and dry, the peak safari season; the rains fall from about November to April.
Entry and arrival
Visa: Zambia has widened its visa-free list in recent years. Check the current rule for a Ghanaian passport with the Zambia Department of Immigration before you book.

Tours in Zambia: Victoria Falls, Livingstone, safaris and river trips. Entrance fees are included in the tour
price; tips are not included but always welcome.
Zambia and Ghana: shared threads
Kaunda and Nkrumah: Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia's first president, was among the young leaders at Kwame Nkrumah's All-African People's Conference in Accra in December 1958. Both men shared the dream of a free and united Africa.
The same bats: the straw-coloured fruit bats of Kasanka are the same species whose great colonies roost in the trees of central Accra.
Two dams, two lakes: Zambia's Lake Kariba and Ghana's Lake Volta, created behind the Kariba and Akosombo dams, are among the largest man-made lakes in the world.
Distances are huge: the parks are far apart and roads can be slow. Small charter or scheduled flights save days.
Safaris cost money: lodges in South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi are expensive. Budget camps and self-drive options exist but need planning.
Timing the falls: at peak flow the spray can hide the view; at the end of the dry season parts of the Zambian side can be almost dry. Choose your month with care.
Power cuts: Zambia depends heavily on hydropower, and droughts have caused long load-shedding. Choose accommodation with backup power.
Mind the clock: Zambia is two hours ahead of Ghana. Check whether your ticket shows local times.
Cash and cards: cards work in Lusaka and lodges, but carry kwacha for markets and small towns.
