Air Côte d'Ivoire from Accra: Abidjan, Monrovia and the Akan world next door

By road, Accra to Abidjan is a long day of driving, with the border crossing at Elubo and its waits. By air it is about an hour, and the clocks do not even change. Air Côte d'Ivoire, the Ivorian national airline, connects the two great cities of the Gulf of Guinea several times a week, and flies on from Accra to Monrovia. Here is what flies, when, and what is waiting on the other side.

Air Côte d'Ivoire in brief

Air Côte d'Ivoire was founded in 2012 by the Ivorian state to replace the failed Air Ivoire, and flew its first service that November. It has grown into one of the strongest airlines in West Africa, with a hub at Abidjan's Félix Houphouët-Boigny Airport, a regional network across West and Central Africa, domestic flights inside Côte d'Ivoire, and long-haul flights to Paris.

Say it in French, and in Nouchi

French is the official language. On the street in Abidjan you will also hear Nouchi, the fast, inventive slang of the city, and in the east, Akan languages close to Twi.

  • Bonjour / Bonsoir: good day / good evening. Always greet before asking anything.
  • Merci: thank you.
  • S'il vous plaît: please.
  • Ça va?: how are you?
  • On dit quoi?: what's up? (Nouchi).
  • Ya fohi: no problem, it's nothing (Nouchi).
  • C'est combien?: how much is it?

Côte d'Ivoire: what is waiting at the other end

The border between Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire was drawn by colonial powers, not by the people who live there. The Nzema, Agni, Abron and Baoulé on the Ivorian side are Akan peoples, close to the Akan of Ghana in language and custom. The Baoulé tell of Queen Abla Pokou, who in the eighteenth century led her people west from the Asante lands, across the Comoé river, to found a new kingdom. Today Abidjan is the economic capital of francophone West Africa: glass towers on the Plateau, lagoons, and some of the best nightlife and music on the coast.

Liberia: the Monrovia connection

Liberia was founded in the 1820s by freed African Americans sent back across the Atlantic by the American Colonization Society, and became Africa's first republic in 1847. The settlers ruled over the indigenous peoples for more than a century, a history that still shapes the country. After the civil wars of 1989 to 2003 and the Ebola epidemic of 2014, Liberia is slowly rebuilding.

Liberia in brief

  • Capital: Monrovia, named after the American president James Monroe.
  • Independence: 26 July 1847.
  • Currency: Liberian dollar (LRD); US dollars are widely used.
  • Language: English, plus Liberian English (Kolokwa) and indigenous languages.
  • Time: GMT, the same as Ghana.
  • Entry for Ghanaians: visa-free as ECOWAS citizens.
  • Getting there from Accra: Air Côte d'Ivoire, ASKY, Kenya Airways and, since May 2026, Turkish Airlines all fly the route.

Honest tips for this route

  • Fly or drive? The coastal road via Elubo is long, and the border can take hours. For a short trip, the hour-long flight is worth the money.
  • Carry your yellow fever card. Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia both check it at the airport.
  • Cash. Change cedis before you leave or use an ATM in Abidjan; cedis are hard to exchange beyond the border areas. CFA francs work across eight West African countries.
  • Abidjan airport traffic. The airport is in Port-Bouët, south of the city. Allow an hour or more to the Plateau at rush hour.
  • Regional schedules move. Do not plan a tight onward connection on a regional flight. Leave a buffer.

Coming the other way: arriving in Ghana

For Ivorian visitors, Ghana is the English-speaking neighbour with the same Akan roots. Start in Accra, then go west along the coast to Cape Coast and Elmina, or to the Western Region and its forts: Fort San Sebastian at Shama, Fort St Anthony at Axim, and on to the Ivorian border at Elubo.
