Brussels Airlines from Accra: Brussels, Lomé and Europe's Africa specialist

Six days a week a Brussels Airlines Airbus lands in Accra in the late afternoon, hops on to Lomé and comes back the same evening for the night flight to Brussels. No European airline flies to more African cities south of the Sahara, a legacy of its predecessor Sabena and of Belgium's long and often brutal involvement in Africa. Here is what flies, when, where Brussels takes you, and the visa rules that matter.

Brussels Airlines in brief

When Sabena, Belgium's national airline since 1923, collapsed in 2001, a new airline rose from what was left. Brussels Airlines kept Sabena's greatest asset: its African network and its knowledge of the continent. Since 2017 it has been fully part of the Lufthansa Group, and it still flies to more destinations in sub-Saharan Africa than any other European carrier. Accra joined that network in 2022.

Say it in French and Dutch

Belgium has three official languages. Brussels is mostly French-speaking; Flanders in the north speaks Dutch. English works widely, but a greeting in the local language is appreciated.

  • Bonjour (French) / Goeiedag (Dutch): good day.
  • Merci / Dank u wel: thank you.
  • S'il vous plaît / Alstublieft: please. In Brussels, "s'il vous plaît" also means "here you are".
  • Ça va?: how are you?
  • Santé! / Schol!: cheers. You will need it: Belgium brews well over a thousand beers.
  • Au revoir / Dag: goodbye.

Belgium: what is waiting at the other end

Belgium is small, crowded with history, and the home of the European Union's institutions. It is also the country of King Leopold II, whose private Congo Free State, from 1885 to 1908, cost millions of African lives. Belgium is only slowly facing that past. The renewed AfricaMuseum at Tervuren and the Congolese quarter of Matonge in Brussels are where that story is most visible. For Ghanaians, Brussels is above all a door to Europe: Schengen, the Eurostar to London, and fast trains to Paris, Amsterdam and Germany.

Belgium in brief

  • Capital: Brussels, also the seat of the EU Commission and NATO.
  • Independence: 1830, from the Netherlands.
  • Currency: euro (EUR).
  • Languages: Dutch, French and German are all official.
  • Time: UTC+1 in winter, UTC+2 in summer.
  • Entry for Ghanaians: a Schengen visa is required, applied for through Belgium's visa partner in Accra.
  • Changing planes in Brussels: Ghanaians need an EU airport transit visa even without leaving the airport, unless they hold a valid US, Canadian, UK or Schengen visa or residence permit.
  • Entry for UK and US passports: visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180 days.

Honest tips for this route

  • The transit visa rule applies here too. Like Schiphol, Brussels requires an airport transit visa for Ghanaians changing planes, unless you hold one of the listed visas or permits. Check before buying a connecting ticket.
  • Brussels by train. The airport station is under the terminal; trains reach Brussels Central in about twenty minutes.
  • Accra–Lomé on a widebody. A short, comfortable hop and often less hassle than the road through Aflao, but compare the fare with ASKY's.
  • Brussels at night. The area around Brussels-Midi and Brussels-Nord stations is rough after dark. Keep your bags close and take a taxi or a ride-hailing car if you arrive late.
  • Food parcels. As everywhere in the EU, meat, fish and dairy products cannot be brought in from outside the EU. Dried fish will be taken.

Coming the other way: arriving in Ghana

Brussels Airlines lands in Accra at about 16:40, early enough to reach your hotel before dark. Belgian visitors need a visa for Ghana. Start with Accra, then go west to the castles at Cape Coast and Elmina and the canopy walk at Kakum, or east into the Volta Region towards the Togo border.
