Air Tanzania from Accra: Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti, one stop away

On 28 January 2026, Air Tanzania's first flight from Dar es Salaam landed in Accra, and Ghana's tourism minister welcomed it as the 26th international airline at the airport. Three times a week, with a stop in Lagos, the national carrier of Tanzania now links Ghana with the Indian Ocean coast. Before, the same trip meant a change in Addis Ababa, Nairobi or even Istanbul. From Dar es Salaam, Air Tanzania's domestic network reaches Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro and the gateways to the Serengeti. Here is how the route works, the entry rules, and Tanzania as it really is.

The schedule: Dar es Salaam, Lagos, Accra

Tanzania is three hours ahead of Ghana all year; Nigeria one hour ahead. Exact times can change with the season; the airline's Accra route page shows the current timetable.

Nyerere, Nkrumah and Zanzibar

Julius Nyerere of Tanganyika and Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana were the two great voices of African unity in the 1960s, and they disagreed on how to get there: Nkrumah wanted a continental government at once, Nyerere believed in building regional unions first. Both stood at the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in Addis Ababa in 1963. Zanzibar adds another connection: like Cape Coast and Elmina on the Atlantic, it was a centre of the slave trade, on the Indian Ocean side, until its market closed in 1873. For visitors from Ghana, Stone Town is the other half of a story they already know.

Honest tips for this route

  • Only three days a week. If your dates do not fit Monday, Wednesday or Friday, Ethiopian via Addis Ababa or Kenya Airways via Nairobi fly more often.
  • Check times close to departure. Young international routes change their timings; confirm a few days before you fly.
  • Safari cash. Many park and lodge payments are in US dollars; bring clean notes printed in 2009 or later, plus a card.
  • Zanzibar insurance. Have your travel insurance documents ready; Zanzibar checks.
  • Kilimanjaro is serious. Altitude sickness is real. Choose longer routes, reputable operators, and go pole pole.
  • Compare. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa also serves Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro, and sometimes costs less.

Coming the other way: from Tanzania to Ghana

For Tanzanians, Accra is now one flight away. Ghana's castles tell the Atlantic chapter of the story Zanzibar tells on the Indian Ocean, and Accra's Nkrumah Memorial Park the story of the man Nyerere argued with. Check the Ghana visa rules before you fly.
