Uganda Airlines from Accra: the new bridge to East Africa

On Tuesday 27 October 2026, flight UR900 touched down at Accra International Airport in the early afternoon heat, and Ghana gained its fourth East African airline, after Ethiopian, Kenya Airways and Air Tanzania. Uganda Airlines now links Entebbe and Accra four times a week, with one stop in Lagos, in just under seven hours. Before, the same journey meant a change in Addis Ababa or Nairobi and up to ten hours on the road. Here is how the route works, what you fly on, the entry rules, and what waits at the other end: mountain gorillas, the source of the Nile, and the AFCON 2027 tournament Uganda co-hosts.

The schedule: Entebbe, Lagos, Accra

All times local. Uganda is three hours ahead of Ghana; Nigeria one hour ahead. Four flights a week; check the days of operation when you book.

What the Lagos stop means

The flight lands in Lagos for about an hour before continuing. Ghana has granted Uganda Airlines "fifth freedom" rights on the Lagos–Accra sector, so the airline can also sell tickets just between Lagos and Accra, alongside Africa World Airlines, Air Peace, Ibom Air, United Nigeria Airlines and ValueJet. If you fly Entebbe–Accra, follow the crew's instructions in Lagos and keep your boarding pass for the second leg.

Say it in Uganda

English is an official language and spoken everywhere. Luganda is the language of Kampala; Swahili is the second official language.

  • Oli otya? (Luganda): how are you? Answer Bulungi: fine.
  • Webale: thank you. Webale nnyo: thank you very much.

Entry and health rules

  • Visa: Uganda runs an official online e-visa system. Visa rules for Ghanaians and other nationalities change, so check the official Ugandan immigration portal before you book; the Uganda mission covering Ghana is based in Abuja.
  • Yellow fever: a valid certificate is required to enter Uganda, and you need it again when you return to Ghana.
  • Malaria: present in most of Uganda, including around Lake Victoria. Talk to a doctor about prevention.
  • Nigeria: if you stay on the aircraft in Lagos as a through passenger, you do not enter Nigeria. Ghanaians need no visa for Nigeria in any case (ECOWAS).

Honest tips for this route

  • A brand-new route. Schedules on new routes often change in the first months. Check your flight a few days before departure.
  • The night return. The flight from Accra leaves in the evening and reaches Entebbe before five in the morning. Book your hotel from the night before, or arrange an early check-in.
  • Compare with Ethiopian and Kenya Airways. Via Addis Ababa or Nairobi there are more daily options; Uganda Airlines is now the quickest one-stop link.
  • Baggage. Check the allowance on your ticket; regional fares on 737 routes can carry tighter limits than long-haul tickets.
  • Old dollar notes. In Uganda, bring US dollars printed in 2009 or later, or use cards and ATMs.
  • Boda bodas. Motorbike taxis are everywhere in Kampala, and accidents are common. Wear a helmet, or use ride-hailing cars.
