Gianair and charter flying in Ghana: private flights, air ambulances and medevac

Not every flight in Ghana leaves from a timetable. A mining engineer needs to be in Obuasi by nine. A patient in Tamale needs a specialist in Accra tonight. A small group wants to see Mole without two days on the road. This is the world of charter and medical flights, and Gianair has worked in it since 2010. Here is what the company does, what other options exist, and what you should check before you hire an aircraft in Ghana.

Gianair in brief

Gianair is a Ghanaian charter airline based at Accra International Airport. It was incorporated on 29 May 2009 and began flying in April 2010. Unlike Africa World Airlines or Passion Air, it does not sell seats on fixed routes. It hires out aircraft and crew: for business trips, private travel, medical emergencies and urgent cargo. It also manages Obuasi Airport on behalf of the mining company AngloGold Ashanti.

What Gianair does

Obuasi: the gold town with its own airport

Obuasi, in the Ashanti Region, sits on one of the richest gold deposits in Africa and has been mined for more than a century. AngloGold Ashanti opened a new airport there in 2012, at a cost of about four million US dollars, so that staff and contractors could reach the mine without the long drive from Accra or Kumasi. Gianair manages the airport and began Accra–Obuasi flights in 2016. These flights mainly serve the mine and are not a normal public route; ask Gianair directly if you need a seat.

Gold and its costs

Obuasi's wealth has a darker side. Illegal mining, galamsey, has poisoned rivers and destroyed forest across the Ashanti and Western regions. If you fly over the area, the brown rivers and cratered land are clearly visible from the air.

Air ambulance and medevac in Ghana: the honest picture

Ghana has good hospitals in Accra and Kumasi, but long distances, bad roads and an overstretched national ambulance service mean that a serious emergency in the regions can quickly become life-threatening. Air transport can close that gap, but capacity is limited and expensive.

  • Gianair: fixed-wing emergency medical rescue between Ghanaian airports, and onward flights abroad.
  • Air Ambulance Foundation: a Ghanaian helicopter air ambulance service, part of Emergency Helicopter Service International, for patient transfers within Ghana and to neighbouring countries.
  • A public air ambulance jet: in April 2026 the businessman Ibrahim Mahama sent his former private jet abroad to be converted into an air ambulance, which he promised would serve all Ghanaians in critical emergencies. Check the current status before relying on it.
  • International air ambulance companies: several firms abroad fly into Ghana to collect patients, usually through an insurance company or embassy.

The most important tip on this page

Before you travel to Ghana, buy travel insurance that explicitly includes medical evacuation and repatriation. An air ambulance flight from Ghana to Europe or North America can cost tens of thousands of dollars. With the right policy, the insurer organises and pays; without it, families often have to raise the money before the aircraft will even take off.

Before you charter an aircraft in Ghana

  • Check the licence. Every commercial operator in Ghana must hold an Air Carrier Licence and Air Operator Certificate from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority. Ask for both and check them.
  • Ask about the aircraft and crew. Aircraft type, age, number of pilots, and whether a medical team is on board for patient flights.
  • Check the destination airstrip. Some regional airports, such as Ho, Wa, Sunyani or Bolgatanga, have limited opening hours, no night lighting or no refuelling. The operator should confirm the strip can take the aircraft.
  • Insurance. Ask what passenger and liability cover the operator carries, and in what amount.
  • Get the full price in writing. Positioning flights, waiting time, landing fees, night surcharges and fuel can double a quote.
  • Private flights use a separate terminal. Charter passengers in Accra are handled through the general aviation or FBO facilities, not Terminal 3. In March 2026 Ghana Airports Company ended its FBO agreement with McDan Aviation over unpaid debts, so check with your operator which facility you will use.
