Flights from Accra to Madrid: Spain with one change

No airline flies nonstop between Ghana and Spain. Madrid is still easy to reach: one change in Lisbon, Casablanca, Istanbul, Brussels or Amsterdam, and you can be on the Gran Vía the same day. Which hub you choose matters more than the fare suggests, because two of them need an airport transit visa for Ghanaians and three do not. Here are the routes, the honest journey times, the visa rules and what is waiting in Madrid.

The best one-stop routes from Accra

Flight times are approximate, without the connection. Add at least two hours for changing planes. Spain is one hour ahead of Ghana in winter and two in summer.

Which one to pick

Fastest: TAP via Lisbon, the shortest total distance, and Lisbon–Madrid is barely an hour. Often cheapest, and no transit visa: Royal Air Maroc via Casablanca. Most flexible: Turkish via Istanbul, with several Madrid flights a day, though the detour east adds hours. Whatever you choose, book Accra to Madrid on one ticket, so the airline must rebook you if the first flight is late.

Transit visas: check before you buy

Ghana is on the EU list of countries whose citizens need an airport transit visa to change planes in the Schengen area, even without leaving the airport. That applies in Lisbon, Brussels and Amsterdam. You are exempt if you hold a valid US, Canadian, UK or Schengen visa, or a residence permit from one of these countries. In practice, if you already have your Spanish Schengen visa, you can connect through a Schengen hub without a separate transit visa, because the first Schengen airport becomes your entry point. Casablanca and Istanbul require no transit visa if you stay airside. Rules change; confirm with the embassy before booking.

Say it in Spanish

Outside hotels and the airport, English is far less common in Madrid than in Amsterdam or London. A little Spanish helps.

  • Hola: hello. Buenos días / Buenas tardes: good morning / good afternoon.
  • Gracias: thank you. Muchas gracias: thank you very much.
  • Por favor: please.
  • ¿Cuánto cuesta?: how much is it?
  • La cuenta, por favor: the bill, please.
  • Perdón: excuse me, sorry.
  • Adiós / Hasta luego: goodbye / see you later.

Spain: what is waiting at the other end

Spain's link with Africa is older and closer than most travellers think. Its North African cities, Ceuta and Melilla, are on the African mainland, and Equatorial Guinea, the former Spanish Guinea, is still Africa's only Spanish-speaking country. Spain also held the asiento, the licence that let traders supply enslaved Africans to its American colonies. Today Spain has a smaller Ghanaian community than Italy or Germany, many of them in Catalonia and the farming regions of Murcia and Andalusia. It is also the destination of the dangerous Atlantic route to the Canary Islands, which West African migrants still attempt in open boats.

Spain in brief

  • Capital: Madrid.
  • Currency: euro (EUR).
  • Languages: Spanish (Castilian); Catalan, Basque and Galician in their regions.
  • Time: UTC+1 in winter, UTC+2 in summer: one or two hours ahead of Ghana.
  • Entry for Ghanaians: a Schengen visa, applied for through Spain's visa partner in Accra. If Spain is your main destination, apply to Spain, not to the country you change planes in.
  • Entry for UK and US passports: visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180 days. The EU's new entry system and the ETIAS travel authorisation are being introduced; check the current rules before travel.
  • Plugs: two round pins (type F). Bring an adapter from Ghana's three-pin plugs.

Madrid: the main attractions

  • The PradoVelázquez, Goya and El Greco in one of the world's great art museums. Free in the last two hours of most days.
  • Reina SofíaPicasso's Guernica, the painting of the bombing of a town in the Spanish Civil War.
  • The Royal PalaceOne of the largest palaces in Europe, still used for state ceremonies.
  • Retiro ParkThe city's green heart, with its lake and the Crystal Palace.
  • Plaza Mayor and La LatinaThe old squares, the tapas bars, and the Sunday Rastro flea market.
  • Toledo and SegoviaDay trips by fast train: the medieval city of three faiths, and the Roman aqueduct.

Arriving at Madrid-Barajas

  • The airport: Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas (MAD), about 12 kilometres north-east of the centre. Terminal 4 handles most flights from Lisbon and Casablanca connections; check yours.
  • Metro: line 8 runs from the airport to Nuevos Ministerios in about 15 minutes, with a small airport supplement on the ticket.
  • Train: Cercanías suburban trains run from Terminal 4 to Atocha and Chamartín stations.
  • Express bus: the airport express runs day and night to Atocha.
  • Taxi: a fixed fare to the city centre; use the official rank, not people offering rides inside the terminal.

Honest tips for this route

  • Visa first. Apply for the Spanish Schengen visa before buying the ticket, and do not pay agents who promise approval.
  • One ticket, not two. Separate cheap tickets via Lisbon or Casablanca leave you stranded if the first flight is late.
  • Madrid keeps late hours. Lunch is at two, dinner rarely before nine. Many shops close in the afternoon outside the centre.
  • Pickpockets. On the metro, at Puerta del Sol and around the Rastro, keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket.
  • The heat. July and August in Madrid reach 40 °C. Spring and autumn are the pleasant seasons.
  • Food parcels. As everywhere in the EU, meat, fish and dairy products cannot be brought in from outside the EU.
