ASKY Airlines from Accra: the airline that connects West Africa

For decades, flying from one West African capital to the next often meant going through Paris, Brussels or Casablanca. ASKY was set up to end that. From its base in Lomé, just 170 kilometres east of Accra, it now reaches around 30 cities across West, Central and East Africa. From Accra it flies to Lomé, Monrovia, Freetown and Banjul, and through Lomé to almost everywhere in between. Here is what flies, when, and where it really gets you.

ASKY Airlines in brief

ASKY was founded in 2008 with backing from West African governments and banks, and flew its first service on 15 January 2010. From the start, Ethiopian Airlines has been its technical partner and major shareholder. It runs the operation, trains the crews and lends aircraft, and ASKY's planes still carry Ethiopian registrations. The Togolese state also holds a minority stake. The model works: Lomé airport handled 1.58 million passengers in 2025 and is already running near its capacity.

These times come from published schedules for July to September 2026. ASKY is restructuring its Lomé hub with a second, night-time wave of flights, so times may move. The Freetown–Banjul rotation was cut from seven to five flights a week in July 2026. Between Accra and Lomé there are about eight to nine flights a week, and Brussels Airlines also flies Accra–Lomé on some days. Always check your exact date on flyasky.com.

Say it in Ewe and French

Southern Togo speaks Ewe, the same language as Ghana's Volta Region. The border cuts straight through one people. Officially, Togo is French-speaking.

  • Woezɔ (Ewe): welcome. The Togolese and Volta answer to Akwaaba.
  • Ŋdi (Ewe): good morning.
  • Akpe (Ewe): thank you. Akpe kakaka: thank you very much.
  • Bonjour / Bonsoir: good day / good evening. Greet before you ask anything, in any shop or office.
  • Ça va? / Ça va bien: how are you? / fine.
  • Merci: thank you.
  • C'est combien?: how much is it? The most useful question in the Grand Marché.

Togo: ASKY's home, Ghana's neighbour

Togo is a narrow strip of a country, barely 50 kilometres wide at the coast and 600 kilometres long. Its history is tangled with Ghana's. Germany claimed it in 1884 with a treaty signed at Togoville on Lake Togo. After the First World War it was split between Britain and France, and in 1956 the British part, Western Togoland, voted to join what became Ghana. That is today's Volta Region. The French part became independent as Togo in 1960.

Togo in brief

  • Capital: Lomé, right on the Ghana border at Aflao.
  • Independence: 27 April 1960, from France.
  • Currency: West African CFA franc (XOF), fixed to the euro at 655.957 francs per euro.
  • Languages: French is official; Ewe and Kabye are the main national languages.
  • Time: GMT, the same as Ghana all year.
  • Entry for Ghanaians and other ECOWAS citizens: no visa; a valid passport or ECOWAS card is enough.
  • Entry for UK, EU and US passports: a visa is needed. Apply online through Togo's official portal before travel, and check the current rules for a visa on arrival.

Honest tips for ASKY

  • Accra to Lomé: fly or drive? The flight takes 50 minutes, but tickets for these 170 kilometres are often surprisingly expensive. By road it is three to four hours along the coast through the Aflao border, usually cheaper, and for Ghanaians and other ECOWAS citizens no visa is needed. Fly when you are connecting onward in Lomé; drive when Lomé is the destination.
  • Connections in Lomé. ASKY times its flights to meet at Lomé, so a ticket from Accra to Dakar or Kinshasa on one booking is the safe way to do it. If the first flight is late, the airline has to rebook you.
  • Expect some delay. On short West African hops, departures half an hour late are common. Do not book a separate onward ticket on another airline with a tight connection.
  • Through-flights stop on the way. The Banjul and Monrovia rotations land in Accra on the way to and from Lomé. You may stay on board while passengers change. That is normal.
  • Security in the Sahel. ASKY flies to Bamako, Niamey and Ouagadougou, but for Mali and Niger, and much of Burkina Faso, most Western governments advise against travel. Check the advice and your insurance first.

Coming the other way: arriving in Ghana

ASKY's morning flights from Monrovia and Freetown land in Accra between half past nine and quarter past ten, and the Lomé flight arrives at lunchtime, all early enough to reach the coast the same day. Start with Accra, then head west to the castles at Cape Coast and Elmina, or east into the Volta Region, which shares its language and much of its history with Togo.
