Royal Air Maroc from Accra: Casablanca, Europe and the Americas

Every night a Royal Air Maroc Boeing lands in Accra before dawn and leaves again an hour later for Casablanca. On three evenings a week a second flight follows. For many Ghanaians it has become the standard way to Europe, and increasingly to North America: one change in Casablanca, often at a lower fare than the direct European carriers. Here is what flies, when, what Casablanca connects to, and what you need to know about Morocco itself.

Royal Air Maroc in brief

Royal Air Maroc was founded in 1957, a year after Morocco's independence, and built its strategy on Casablanca's position at the corner of Africa, Europe and the Atlantic. It flies to more African capitals than almost any other airline outside the continent's East, and on to Europe, the Gulf and the Americas. In June 2026 it opened Africa's first nonstop route to Los Angeles. Morocco plans to grow the fleet many times over ahead of the 2030 World Cup, which it co-hosts with Spain and Portugal.

These times come from published schedules for July to October 2026, with the winter timetable from 29 October 2026. The daily rotation is the backbone; the evening flight days have shifted several times this year. Because Morocco moves its clocks around Ramadan, Casablanca arrival times shift by an hour in spring. Say it in Moroccan Arabic, Amazigh and French

  • Salam alaikum: peace be upon you, the everyday greeting. The answer is Wa alaikum salam.
  • Labas?: how are you? The answer is Labas, hamdullah: fine, thank God.
  • Shukran: thank you.
  • La, shukran: no, thank you. You will need this one in every medina, said with a smile and repeated.
  • Bshhal?: how much?
  • Bslama: goodbye.
  • Azul (Amazigh): hello, in the mountains and the south.
  • Bonjour / Merci: French works almost everywhere in the cities.

Morocco: what is waiting at the other end

Morocco is Africa at its most visited: more than 17 million tourists a year come for the medinas of Marrakech and Fes, the Sahara dunes and the Atlas Mountains. Casablanca, where your plane lands, is the business capital but not the political one. That is Rabat, an hour up the coast. Morocco left the African Union in 1984 over the Western Sahara dispute and rejoined in 2017. It hosted the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025/26 and is preparing for the 2030 World Cup.

Morocco in brief

  • Capital: Rabat. Casablanca is the largest city and the airline hub.
  • Independence: 2 March 1956, from France; the Spanish zone followed weeks later.
  • Currency: Moroccan dirham (MAD). It is a closed currency, so you get it inside Morocco and change back before leaving.
  • Languages: Arabic and Amazigh (Tamazight) are official. Moroccan Darija is spoken everywhere, and French is the language of business.
  • Time: GMT+1 most of the year, GMT during Ramadan.
  • Entry for Ghanaians: no visa, but an Electronic Travel Authorisation (AEVM) is required before travel, applied for online at acces-maroc.ma. Airlines check it at boarding.
  • Entry for UK, EU and US passports: visa-free for up to 90 days.
  • Transit: if you stay inside Casablanca airport, no visa or AEVM is needed.

Where Royal Air Maroc takes you next

Casablanca is the turning point for Europe, the Americas and the Gulf. The early-morning flight from Accra arrives in time for the midday European departures. These are the countries it opens up, with their capitals.

The Americas and the Middle East

For West Africa, don't fly north first

Royal Air Maroc flies from Casablanca to Dakar, Conakry, Banjul, Ouagadougou, Cotonou, Lagos and many more. But from Accra a detour via Morocco rarely makes sense. Fly ASKY via Lomé, or one of the direct regional airlines. Our city pages show the quickest way from Accra: Dakar (Senegal), Conakry (Guinea), Banjul (The Gambia), Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Cotonou (Benin) and Lagos (Nigeria).

Honest tips for this route

  • Often the cheapest way to Europe. Accra–Casablanca–Europe on one ticket frequently undercuts the direct European airlines. Compare before booking.
  • Watch the connection time. Some itineraries offered online leave you twelve hours or more in Casablanca, often overnight. Pick a short connection, or plan the long one as a stopover with a hotel, and your AEVM ready if you are Ghanaian.
  • Getting into Casablanca. A train runs from the airport station under the terminal to the city centre in about 40 minutes. It is the cheapest and simplest option.
  • The 05:05 arrival in Accra. The daily flight lands before sunrise. Arrange your pickup in advance. Accra's roads are empty at that hour, so it is actually a quick ride.
  • In the medinas. Unofficial guides and touts are persistent, especially in Marrakech and Fes. A polite "la, shukran" and walking on works. Agree any price before a service starts.
  • Remember the dirham. You cannot buy dirhams before arrival or export them. Change small amounts and spend them before you leave.

Coming the other way: arriving in Ghana

The daily Royal Air Maroc flight lands in Accra at five in the morning, which means a full first day in Ghana. Many European, American and Moroccan visitors arrive this way. Start with the capital, then head west to the castles at Cape Coast and Elmina and the canopy walk at Kakum.
