Transit visas: the rule that catches Ghanaians out

A cheap ticket to Canada via London, or to Germany via Amsterdam, can end at the boarding gate in Accra. Ghana is on the list of countries whose citizens need an airport transit visa to change planes in the Schengen area and in the UK, even without leaving the airport.

Changing planes inTransit visa for Ghanaians?
London (Heathrow, Gatwick)Usually yes: a UK Direct Airside Transit Visa, unless you hold certain valid visas, such as for the US or Canada.
Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon, RomeYes: an EU airport transit visa, unless you hold a valid US, Canadian, UK or Schengen visa or residence permit.
IstanbulNot for airside transit within the transit area.
Dubai, DohaNot if you stay airside; a visa is needed to leave the airport.
Cairo, CasablancaNot if you stay airside.

Rules change. Check the embassy of the transit country before buying a connecting ticket.

London: the only nonstop to Britain

British Airways flies Accra–Heathrow every night and Accra–Gatwick three times a week. It is the route of the British Ghanaian community, from Peckham to Tottenham, and of students heading to British universities. The UK visa is the hard part: in the year to March 2026, only about 57 per cent of Ghanaian visitor applications were approved.

Amsterdam and Brussels: the doors to Schengen

KLM has flown to the Gold Coast for decades, and Schiphol is one of the best-connected airports in Europe. Brussels Airlines, heir to Sabena's African network, flies Accra six times a week via Lomé. Both land early in the morning, in time for connections across Europe. Fast trains link Brussels and Amsterdam with Paris, London and Germany.

Amsterdam: canal boats and guided tours. Entrance fees are included in the tour price; tips are not included but always welcome.

Brussels and Belgium: the old city, chocolate and beer, Bruges and Ghent. Entrance fees are included in the tour price; tips are not included but always welcome.

Lisbon and Rome: southern Europe

The Portuguese reached the Gold Coast in 1471 and built Elmina in 1482; today TAP links Accra with Lisbon, and through Lisbon with Brazil. ITA Airways, Italy's young flag carrier, flies to Rome four times a week, serving the tens of thousands of Ghanaians in northern Italy, but calls the route seasonal, so check the winter schedule.

Guided tours in Rome: the Colosseum, the Forum and the Vatican. Entrance fees are included in the tour price; tips are not included but always welcome.

Istanbul: the hub that reaches everywhere

Turkish Airlines flies to more countries than any other airline, and from Accra it is often the cheapest one-stop way to Germany, Eastern Europe, Russia, Central Asia and even the US. Istanbul airport requires no transit visa for Ghanaians who stay airside.

Dubai and Doha: the Gulf

Emirates flies Accra–Dubai eleven times a week, on a Boeing 777 that also links Accra with Abidjan. Dubai is Ghana's shopping and trading city, the transfer point for Umrah and Hajj, and the door to China, India and Australia. Qatar Airways offers the same via Doha. Ghanaians need a UAE or Qatar visa before travel, except when staying airside in transit.

Guided tours in Dubai and Abu Dhabi: the souks, the desert safari, the Grand Mosque. Ghanaians: sort your UAE visa first. Entrance fees are included in the tour price; tips are not included but always welcome.

Beirut, Cairo and Casablanca

Middle East Airlines links Accra with Beirut and the large Lebanese community in Ghana; check the travel advice for Lebanon before booking. EgyptAir flies to Cairo four times a week, where the Grand Egyptian Museum is now open, and Royal Air Maroc's Casablanca hub is often the cheapest one-stop route to Europe and North America.

Honest tips

  • Visa first, ticket second. UK, Schengen, UAE and Egypt visas must be obtained before travel. A refusal stays on record.
  • Avoid "visa agents". No one can guarantee a visa. Apply through the official visa centres in Accra.
  • Food parcels. Meat, fish and dairy products cannot be brought into the EU or the UK. Dried fish will be taken.
  • Night arrivals. Most Europe flights leave Accra late and land before dawn. Plan your first train or transfer.
  • Compare. Nonstop is fastest, but Royal Air Maroc, Turkish or EgyptAir via their hubs are often far cheaper.
  • December. The diaspora season fills every flight from Europe. Book early.

Coming the other way: arriving in Ghana
