Entebbe from Accra: into the Pearl of Africa

Winston Churchill called Uganda "the Pearl of Africa", and for once a colonial cliché was not far wrong: mountain gorillas in misty forests, the Nile pouring out of Lake Victoria, crater lakes, savannah and snow-capped mountains on the equator. Entebbe, on the shores of Lake Victoria, is the country's gateway. From Accra there is no nonstop flight, but three good one-stop routes go via Kigali, Nairobi or Addis Ababa. Here is how to choose, and what waits at the other end.

Uganda in brief

Say it in Luganda and Swahili

  • Oli otya? (Luganda): how are you? The answer is Bulungi, fine.
  • Webale (Luganda): thank you.
  • Jambo / Asante (Swahili): hello / thank you.

Uganda lies on the equator but at about 1,100 to 1,200 metres around Lake Victoria, so the climate is mild all year. The main rains come around March to May and September to November.

Entry and arrival

  • Visa: Uganda is outside ECOWAS, and its visa rules differ by nationality. Most visitors apply for an e-visa online in advance. Check the current rule for a Ghanaian passport on Uganda's official immigration website before you book.
  • East Africa Tourist Visa: if you also plan to visit Rwanda and Kenya, one visa can cover all three countries.
  • Yellow fever: a vaccination certificate is required.
  • Into Kampala: taxis and pre-booked transfers take about 45 minutes via the expressway, longer in Kampala's traffic.

Entebbe and Kampala: what to see

  • Entebbe Botanical GardensOld gardens on the lakeshore, laid out in 1898, full of monkeys and birds.
  • Ngamba IslandA chimpanzee sanctuary on an island in Lake Victoria, reached by boat from Entebbe.
  • Kasubi TombsThe UNESCO-listed burial place of the kings of Buganda, in Kampala.
  • Namugongo Martyrs ShrineUganda's great pilgrimage site, which draws huge crowds every 3 June.
  • Uganda National MosqueOn Old Kampala hill, with the best view over the city from its minaret.
  • The EquatorThe famous line crosses the Kampala–Masaka road, a short drive from the capital.

Honest tips for Uganda

  • Distances are long: Bwindi and the western parks are a full day's drive from Kampala. Consider a domestic flight from Entebbe if time is short.
  • Gorilla permits: they are limited and sell out, especially in the dry seasons. Book well ahead through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a trusted operator.
  • Bring newer dollars: US notes printed before 2009, or torn and marked notes, are often refused.
  • Boda-bodas: Kampala's motorbike taxis are fast but have a poor safety record. Use app-based services with helmets, or a car.
  • Mind the clock: Uganda is three hours ahead of Ghana. Check whether your ticket shows local times.
  • Check current advice: look at travel advisories for border areas with DR Congo and South Sudan before travelling far west or north.
