No foreign airline flies in and out of Accra as often as Ethiopian. Up to three times a day an Ethiopian jet leaves Accra International Airport for Addis Ababa, and from there the network fans out to more than 130 destinations: East and Southern Africa, the Gulf, India, China, Europe and North America. Ethiopian is the oldest surviving airline in Africa and today by far the biggest. It was founded in December 1945, flew its first service, Addis Ababa to Cairo, in April 1946, and has never stopped flying since, through a revolution, a civil war and a famine. Where many African flag carriers collapsed, Ethiopian grew, and Addis Ababa became the busiest connecting hub on the continent. For West Africans that matters: from Accra, Addis is the quickest way to most of East and Southern Africa that does not go through Europe or the Gulf.

Ethiopian currently flies 16 times a week between Accra and Addis Ababa. From 1 December 2026 the schedule rises to 21 flights a week, three a day. All times are local: Accra is on GMT, Addis Ababa is three hours ahead.

With the move to 21 weekly flights on 1 December, times and operating days will change again, and a third daily rotation will be added. The early-morning and night flights do not run every day. Ethiopian time is different, twice over
The clock. Ethiopians count the hours from sunrise, not midnight. Six in the morning on your watch is twelve o'clock in Ethiopian time, so "two o'clock" in conversation usually means eight in the morning. Airlines, hotels and banks use the international clock, but when a driver or a shop says a time, ask which one.
The calendar. Ethiopia has its own calendar of thirteen months and is seven to eight years behind the Western one. New Year, Enkutatash, falls on 11 September, and in October 2026 Ethiopia is in the year 2019.
Say it in Amharic
Ethiopia is the only African country that was never colonised. Its army defeated Italy at Adwa in 1896, and the five-year Italian occupation from 1936 to 1941 ended in liberation. That is why Ethiopia's green, yellow and red became the colours of African independence, and why Ghana's flag, and many others, carry them. Ethiopia has rock churches, castles, Africa's highest mountains outside the east African volcanoes, coffee ceremonies and some of the oldest human remains ever found. It also has conflict in parts of the north, and an honest page has to say so.

Since 2023 there has been armed conflict in the Amhara region between the Fano militias and the federal government. As of August 2026, the UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to all of Amhara, and the United States advises against travel there too. Amhara is where Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar and the Simien Mountains are, the heart of the classic historic route. All civilian flights to and from Tigray, including Axum and Mekele, have been suspended since 29 January 2026. Some local tour operators still run trips and say the tourist sites are calm. But a government warning against all travel usually voids your travel insurance. Check the current advice and your policy before you book anything in the north.

For West Africa, don't fly east first
Booking Accra to Dakar or Ouagadougou via Addis Ababa makes no sense. For West Africa, Ethiopian's partner ASKY flies from Accra itself, via its base in Lomé, and the two airlines' tickets can be combined. The daily ET921 lands in Accra around eleven in the morning, which gives you the whole afternoon. Many passengers on it are not staying: they continue on ASKY to Lomé, Freetown, Monrovia or Banjul. If Ghana is your destination, start with the capital, then head west to the castles at Cape Coast and Elmina and the canopy walk at Kakum.
