US flights from Accra: Delta, United and the nonstops to America

Two American airlines fly nonstop between Ghana and the United States: Delta every day to New York, and United to Washington, plus a seasonal Delta flight to Atlanta. Between them they carry the families of more than 200,000 Ghanaians in America, students heading to university, business travellers, and African Americans coming home to the coast their ancestors were taken from. Here are both routes side by side, the honest truth about the US visa, and where each airline takes you next.

The short answer

Choose by where you are going, not by the airline. Family in the Bronx or New Jersey: Delta. Family in the DMV, the Washington area where most Ghanaian Americans live: United. Going on to the South or the West: compare Delta via Atlanta with United via Dulles, which lands early enough for the morning connections.

The real timetable

New York and Washington are five hours behind Ghana in winter and four in American summer time.

The US visa, in plain words

For Ghanaians

  • Visa type: a B1/B2 visitor visa is required. Ghana is not in the Visa Waiver Program, so there is no ESTA.
  • How: fill in the DS-160 online, pay the fee (USD 185 in 2026), and attend an interview at the US Embassy in Accra.
  • Validity: B1/B2 visas for Ghanaians can again be issued for up to five years, multiple entry.
  • The 2026 pauses: the pauses reported in 2026 concerned immigrant visas only, and the courts ended them in August. Visitor visas continued.
  • Refusals: a 214(b) refusal means the officer was not convinced you will return. Real ties to Ghana, such as work, family and property, matter more than a thick file.
  • Agents: no one can guarantee a US visa. Apply only through the official US visa portal for Ghana.
  • UK and most EU passports: ESTA online before travel.
  • Americans visiting Ghana: a Ghana visa is needed in advance.

The US cities, with a Ghanaian eye

The bond between Ghana and Black America runs deep: Nkrumah's student years in Pennsylvania, W. E. B. Du Bois's last home in Accra, the Year of Return in 2019. These are the places where that story is told.

Guided tours across the USA: New York, Washington, Boston, Chicago, Miami, Orlando and New Orleans, with local guides. Entrance fees are included in the tour price; tips are not included but always welcome, and in America a tip for the guide is expected.

Onward across America

You clear US immigration and customs at your first airport, New York or Washington, then re-check your bags. Both hubs connect to almost every city in North America.

One-stop options: often cheaper, sometimes complicated

Nonstop is fastest, but not always cheapest. Several airlines fly from Accra to the US with one change, often at lower fares. Check the transit rules: changing planes in London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon or Rome usually needs an airport transit visa for Ghanaians, unless you already hold a valid US visa, which in many cases exempts you.

Honest tips for the US routes

  • Immigration queues. JFK in the afternoon and Dulles before dawn can both be slow. Keep your US address, return ticket and documents in your hand luggage.
  • Connections. Allow at least three hours at JFK and two and a half at Dulles; you clear immigration and re-check bags.
  • Baggage home. The Accra-bound flights are famously full of heavy suitcases. Check the weight limits and excess charges before you shop.
  • Cards. Ghanaian cards may be blocked abroad. Tell your bank before you fly; contactless payment works everywhere in the US.
  • Tipping. Expected, not optional: 18 to 20 per cent in restaurants, 15 to 20 per cent for taxis.
  • December. The diaspora season fills both airlines. Book months ahead for Christmas.

Coming home to Ghana

Delta lands in Accra at breakfast time and United in the morning, so you have the whole first day. For many African American travellers this is the journey of a lifetime. These are the places where the diaspora story is told honestly.
