Accra International Airport · Routes ranked by weekly flights · October 2026
Look at the departures board at Accra International Airport and one thing stands out. The busiest routes are not London or New York but Kumasi, Tamale and Lagos: short hops flown many times a day. Behind them come the West African capitals along the coast, the big transfer hubs in Addis Ababa and Dubai, and then Europe and America. This page ranks every destination by how often it is flown from Accra, names every airline on each route, and links straight to the details.
Approximate departures per week from Accra, October 2026, counted from the airline timetables on this site. Where an airline does not publish a fixed weekly count, the table shows a band. Frequencies change with the season, so always confirm on the airline's page.

How to read this table
Counts are departures from Accra per week, rounded. Multi-stop flights are counted once for each city they serve from Accra: the Emirates flight to Dubai also flies Accra–Abidjan, and ASKY's Freetown flight continues to Banjul. Charter operators such as Gianair are not included. Seasonal routes, like ITA to Rome or Delta's Atlanta flights, can disappear in winter and return in summer.
Accra–Kumasi is by far the busiest route from Accra, and it is not hard to see why. The drive takes five hours or more on one of Ghana's most dangerous highways; the flight takes under an hour. Tamale follows, as the gateway to the whole North. Two domestic airlines share these routes, which has kept fares competitive.
Lagos is Accra's busiest international route, with three airlines and well over thirty flights a week. Next come the neighbours along the Gulf of Guinea: Abidjan, Lomé, Monrovia and Freetown. All are visa-free for Ghanaians as ECOWAS citizens, and all except Lagos are on the same clock as Accra. Several of these routes are flown as chains, Lagos–Accra–Monrovia or Accra–Freetown–Banjul, so Accra works as a stepping stone along the coast.
Addis Ababa is Accra's second-busiest international destination, not because so many people stop in Ethiopia but because Ethiopian Airlines carries them onwards to East and Southern Africa, India and China. Nairobi, Kigali and Johannesburg each have their own direct airline from Accra.
Dubai is the most-flown destination outside Africa and Europe: eleven Emirates flights a week, carrying traders, Umrah and Hajj pilgrims, and passengers bound for China, India and Australia. Doha and Istanbul play the same role for Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines, and Beirut links Accra with Ghana's Lebanese community.
London leads with ten British Airways flights a week, the only nonstops between Ghana and Britain. KLM to Amsterdam and Brussels Airlines to Brussels follow, then Lisbon, Rome and, via Istanbul or Casablanca, almost every European city. Remember that Ghanaians need an airport transit visa to change planes in most Schengen hubs and in London.
Delta's daily New York flight and United's Washington service are the only nonstops between Ghana and the United States. Both carry the large Ghanaian communities of the East Coast, and both bring African Americans to the coast their ancestors were taken from. For Canada, the Caribbean and Brazil, you change planes in New York, Washington, Europe or Casablanca.
Many African capitals have no daily flight from Accra, but they are easy to reach with one connection or a short regional hop. These city pages show the quickest way to each, which airline to choose, and what is waiting there.
Whichever of these routes brings you to Ghana, the first steps are the same: the capital, then the coast. Jamestown and the Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra, the castles of Cape Coast and Elmina, and the canopy walk at Kakum are all within a day or two.
