Bujumbura from Accra: drums, hills and Lake Tanganyika

Burundi is one of Africa's smallest and least-visited countries: a land of steep green hills, tea and banana terraces, and royal drummers whose thunder has become a symbol of the nation. Bujumbura, its biggest city, lies on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, the world's longest freshwater lake, with the mountains of DR Congo rising across the water. Very few Ghanaians go there. This page explains how to get there, what you will find, and what to expect in a country that is beautiful, poor and still recovering from a hard history.

Burundi in brief

Key facts

  • Capital: Gitega has been the political capital since 2019. Bujumbura remains the economic capital, the largest city and the home of most embassies.
  • Airport: Melchior Ndadaye International Airport (BJM), named in 2019 after Burundi's first democratically elected president, about 10 km from central Bujumbura.
  • From Accra: one stop, usually via Nairobi, Addis Ababa or Entebbe.
  • Time: Central Africa Time, UTC+2, two hours ahead of Ghana.
  • Currency: Burundian franc (BIF). US dollars and euros are needed for many larger payments.
  • Languages: Kirundi (national language), French and English (official), and Swahili in the towns.
  • Independence: 1 July 1962, from Belgium.

Say it in Kirundi

  • Amahoro: peace, used as a greeting.
  • Bite? How are things? The answer is Ni sawa or Ni meza, fine.
  • Murakoze: thank you, the same word as in Rwanda.

Bujumbura sits low on the lakeshore and is hot all year. The hills inland, including Gitega, are much cooler. The main dry season runs from about June to September.

Entry and arrival

  • Visa: Burundi is outside ECOWAS. A visa on arrival or an advance visa is generally available; check the current rule for a Ghanaian passport with the Burundian authorities before you travel.
  • Yellow fever: a vaccination certificate is required.
  • Cash: bring clean, recent US dollars or euros. Cards are rarely accepted and ATMs often do not take foreign cards.
  • Into town: the airport is close to the city. Arrange a hotel pickup for your first arrival.

Burundi and Ghana: two drum nations

  • The drum: in Burundi, the royal drum was a symbol of kingship and the nation. In Ghana, the Akan talking drums, the atumpan, carried messages, proverbs and the history of the chiefs. Both traditions survive today.
  • Independence leaders: Burundi's independence hero, Prince Louis Rwagasore, was a pan-Africanist of Nkrumah's generation. He was assassinated in October 1961, only weeks after winning elections.

Honest tips for Burundi

  • Check current advice: Burundi has a difficult political history, and the border areas with DR Congo, near Bujumbura, are affected by the conflict in eastern Congo. Check your government's travel advice and local news before you go.
  • Fuel and shortages: in recent years Burundi has faced serious fuel and foreign-currency shortages, which can disrupt transport. Plan with slack.
  • Two exchange rates: official and street rates have differed greatly. Change money only at legal bureaux and banks; illegal exchange can lead to serious trouble.
  • Photography: do not photograph government buildings, police, soldiers or the presidential palace.
  • Swim with care: Lake Tanganyika is beautiful, but crocodiles and hippos live in parts of it. Use known beaches only.
  • French helps: English is official, but French and Kirundi are what you will hear. A few words go a long way.
