Air Burkina from Accra: the short hop to Ouagadougou

Ouagadougou is barely 80 minutes from Accra by air, and two airlines now fly it: Africa World Airlines from the Ghanaian side, and Air Burkina, the national carrier of Burkina Faso, from the other. Air Burkina was born in 1967 as Air Volta, renamed when Thomas Sankara renamed the country in 1984, and taken back into full state ownership in 2026. Its route to Accra links two countries bound by a long border, by the friendship of Sankara and Jerry Rawlings, and by a road through Paga that thousands still travel every week. Here is how to fly it, and the honest truth about Burkina Faso today.

Say it in Burkina Faso

French is the language of administration; Mooré, the language of the Mossi, is spoken across Ouagadougou. Many people in the south also understand some Twi or Hausa from trade with Ghana.

  • Bonjour / Merci: hello / thank you.
  • Ne y windiga (Mooré): good afternoon.
  • Barka (Mooré): thank you.
  • Ça va?: how are you? The question to start every conversation.
  • Ouaga: what everyone calls the capital.

Entry rules, and Burkina Faso outside ECOWAS

In January 2025, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger formally left ECOWAS and formed their own Alliance of Sahel States (AES). The three governments announced that citizens of ECOWAS countries could continue to enter without a visa, and Ghana has kept close relations with all three. But the legal basis has changed, and rules can change with it.

  • Ghanaians: carry a valid passport, and check the current entry rules with the Embassy of Burkina Faso in Accra before you travel.
  • Other nationalities: most need a visa, applied for through Burkina Faso's official channels in advance.
  • Yellow fever: a valid certificate is required to enter Burkina Faso and checked again on your return to Ghana.
  • Meningitis and malaria: Burkina Faso lies in the African meningitis belt; ask a doctor about vaccination and malaria prevention.

Safety: the honest picture

Burkina Faso has been fighting armed jihadist groups since 2015, and large parts of the north and east are dangerous. Most Western governments advise against all travel to most of the country and against all but essential travel to Ouagadougou. Many Ghanaian traders, students and families travel there regularly and know the situation well; first-time visitors should not.

  • Stay informed: check your own government's current travel advice before booking, and register with your embassy.
  • Stay in Ouagadougou: if you must travel, keep to the capital and travel with local contacts who know the city.
  • Avoid the roads at night: outside the cities, and on long-distance routes, road travel after dark is a serious risk.
  • Insurance: check whether your travel insurance covers Burkina Faso at all; many policies exclude it.

Sankara and Rawlings: the comrades of the 1980s

In the early 1980s, two young army officers ruled neighbouring countries and saw themselves as brothers in the same revolution: Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings in Ghana, and Captain Thomas Sankara in Upper Volta, which he renamed Burkina Faso. They visited each other, held joint military exercises and spoke of uniting their peoples. Sankara's rule ended with his assassination in October 1987, a death that shocked Ghana. Decades later his name is on Ouagadougou's airport, and Burkina Faso's current leaders openly claim his legacy. For Ghanaian travellers, the Sankara memorial in Ouagadougou is part of their own region's story.

The alternative: by road via Paga

Many travellers between Ghana and Burkina Faso still go by road, through Tamale and Bolgatanga to the border at Paga, and on to Ouagadougou, about 165 kilometres further. Long-distance buses run from Accra and Kumasi. If you fly Accra–Tamale with Africa World Airlines or Passion Air, the border is about three hours by road. Before setting out, check the security situation on the Burkinabè side and never travel the road at night.

Coming the other way: from Burkina Faso to Ghana

For Burkinabè travellers, Accra is the nearest coast and one of the region's great markets, and many have family across the border in Ghana's north. Check the current Ghana entry rules for Burkinabè passports before you travel.
