Qatar Airways from Accra: Doha and the world beyond

Qatar Airways links Accra with Doha on its Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and from 25 October 2026 it does so every day. It has been a rough year for the Gulf airlines: in March 2026 regional conflict closed the skies over the Gulf, and Qatar grounded most of its fleet for weeks. Accra came back in April and is now growing again. Here is what flies, when, what Doha connects to, and what you need for a visa.

Qatar Airways in brief

Qatar Airways started in 1994 and was relaunched by the Qatari state in 1997. In less than three decades it has become one of the world's most decorated airlines, famous for its Qsuite business class and its hub, Hamad International Airport, opened in 2014. Like Emirates, it lives from connecting passengers between continents through its home airport. Unlike Emirates, it belongs to an alliance, oneworld, together with British Airways and Royal Air Maroc.

Say it in Gulf Arabic (English works too)

  • Hala or Marhaba: hi, hello.
  • Salam alaikum: peace be upon you. The answer is Wa alaikum salam.
  • Shukran: thank you.
  • Afwan: you're welcome.
  • Inshallah: God willing.
  • Ma'a salama: goodbye.

Most people working in Doha come from South Asia, the Philippines and Africa, including many Ghanaians, so English is the language of daily life.

Qatar: what is waiting at the other end

Qatar is a small peninsula with one of the highest incomes in the world, built on natural gas. Doha has turned itself from a pearling town into a city of museums, stadiums and towers, and it hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup. For most Ghanaian travellers Doha is a transfer point. If you have a day or two, it is a surprisingly good stopover: compact, safe and full of things to see. Many Ghanaians also live and work there, and that story has two sides, which the honest tips below cover.

Qatar in brief

  • Capital: Doha.
  • Independence: 3 September 1971, from British protection.
  • Currency: Qatari riyal (QAR), fixed to the US dollar.
  • Language: Arabic is official; English is used everywhere.
  • Time: UTC+3, three hours ahead of Ghana all year.
  • Entry for Ghanaians: a visa is required before travel, applied for online through Qatar's Hayya platform at hayya.qa.
  • Entry for UK, EU and US passports: visa-free on arrival.
  • Transit: if you stay inside Hamad airport, no visa is needed.

Honest tips for this route

  • Check which routing you are on. Accra to Doha nonstop is QR1424 at 11:25. On QR1423 you go via Abidjan first, adding about three hours.
  • Watch the region. In March 2026 conflict in the Gulf grounded most Qatar Airways flights for more than two weeks and left passengers stranded. Before you travel, check the current situation, and buy travel insurance that covers disruption.
  • Job offers in Qatar. Many Ghanaians work in Qatar's security, construction and service sectors. Recruitment agents who charge large fees, or promise jobs on visit visas, are a known problem. Work only through licensed agencies and a proper work visa.
  • A long layover is worth it. Hamad airport is one of the best in the world to wait in, and with a visa the city is twenty minutes away by metro.
  • The heat. From June to September Doha often reaches 45 °C, with high humidity. November to March is pleasant.
  • Compare with Emirates. Emirates flies Accra–Dubai eleven times a week. For the same Asian destination, compare both on price and connection time.

Coming the other way: arriving in Ghana

Qatar Airways flights reach Accra either before ten in the morning (via Abidjan) or after lunch (nonstop from Doha). Visitors from Asia, the Gulf and Australia arrive this way. Start with Accra, then go west to the castles at Cape Coast and Elmina and the canopy walk at Kakum.
