Flights from Accra to Douala: Cameroon with one change

Ghana and Cameroon share more than a long football rivalry. Both were carved up by the same German treaties of 1884, both were split between Britain and France after the First World War, and both held a plebiscite that decided which country a British-run strip of land would join. Douala, Cameroon's port and biggest city, is only a few hours away with one change in Lomé or Lagos. Here are the routes, the visa rules that catch Ghanaians out, and the honest picture of travelling in Cameroon today.

The best one-stop routes from Accra

Flight times are approximate, without the connection. Cameroon is one hour ahead of Ghana all year.

Which one to pick

The obvious choice: ASKY via Lomé, a short first leg and a stop where Ghanaians need no visa. Via Lagos: the Accra–Lagos leg is the busiest route in the region, but the Lagos–Douala onward flight changes airline and schedule often; check who flies it on your date, and book through on one ticket if you can. The Casablanca, Addis, Nairobi and Istanbul routes are long detours, worth it only on a very good fare.

Say it in Cameroon

Cameroon is officially bilingual, French and English, but Douala lives in French, and on the street you will hear Cameroonian Pidgin and Camfranglais, a mix of French, English and local languages.

  • Bonjour / Bonsoir: good day / good evening. Always greet first.
  • Merci / Merci beaucoup: thank you / thank you very much.
  • C'est combien?: how much is it?
  • How na? (Pidgin): how are you? Close to Ghanaian Pidgin, but not the same.
  • On dit quoi? (Camfranglais): what's up?

Cameroon in brief

Key facts

  • Capital: Yaoundé. Douala is the largest city, the main port and the business capital, but not the capital.
  • Independence: French Cameroun on 1 January 1960; the British Southern Cameroons joined in October 1961.
  • Currency: Central African CFA franc (XAF). It is pegged to the euro at the same rate as the West African CFA franc used in Togo or Côte d'Ivoire, but the two are not interchangeable: West African CFA notes are not accepted in Cameroon.
  • Languages: French and English (official), Pidgin and more than 200 national languages.
  • Time: West Africa Time, UTC+1, one hour ahead of Ghana.
  • Entry for Ghanaians: Cameroon is not in ECOWAS, so the ECOWAS visa-free rule does not apply. A visa is needed, applied for through Cameroon's official online visa system or the Cameroonian High Commission in Accra. Check the current procedure before booking.
  • Entry for UK, EU and US passports: a visa is required, also through the official online system.
  • Yellow fever: a certificate is required. Carry your card with your passport.

Kamerun, Togoland and two plebiscites

In July 1884, the same month Germany claimed Togo, the German consul Gustav Nachtigal and agents of the Hamburg firm Woermann signed treaties with the Duala kings Bell and Akwa, and Kamerun became a German colony. Thirty years later, in 1914, the Germans hanged Rudolf Duala Manga Bell, the educated Duala king who had resisted the seizure of his people's land. He is Cameroon's national hero today, and his family palace, the Pagode, still stands in Douala.

After the First World War, Kamerun was divided between France and Britain, just like Togoland. The parallels run on. In 1956, British Togoland voted to join Ghana. In 1961, the British-run Cameroons held their own plebiscite: the northern part chose Nigeria, and the southern part chose Cameroon. The English-speaking regions that came from that southern part have been in crisis since 2016, a conflict that still affects travel today.

Douala and beyond: what to see

  • La PagodeThe palace of the Bell family, built in 1905 in the Bonanjo quarter: Douala's most famous building.
  • Bonanjo and the Wouri waterfrontThe old administrative quarter, the German-era buildings and the long Wouri bridge.
  • doual'artThe contemporary art centre whose public sculptures are scattered across the city.
  • Kribi and the Lobé FallsBeaches south of Douala, and a waterfall that drops straight into the sea.
  • Mount Cameroon and LimbeWest Africa's highest mountain and Limbe's botanic garden, in the South-West Region. Check the security advice first.
  • YaoundéThe capital, in the hills, with the national museum and the Mvog-Betsi zoo.

Arriving at Douala International Airport

  • The airport: Douala International (DLA), on the edge of the city, about 10 kilometres from the centre.
  • Immigration: have your visa, yellow fever card, return ticket and hotel address ready.
  • Into town: arrange a hotel pickup if you can. Yellow taxis are shared and fares are negotiated; agree the price first.
  • Traffic and heat: Douala is hot, humid and congested. Allow time for every journey.

Honest tips for this route

  • Visa first. Cameroon is not ECOWAS. Ghanaians who are used to visa-free West Africa get caught out at check-in in Accra.
  • Security in the regions. The North-West and South-West regions, the English-speaking areas, and the Far North, near Lake Chad, are affected by conflict. Douala, Yaoundé and Kribi are generally calmer. Check your government's travel advice and your insurance.
  • Two CFA francs. Do not bring West African CFA notes from Lomé expecting to spend them. Change in Cameroon or withdraw locally.
  • Police checks. Carry your passport, or a copy and your visa, at all times. Checkpoints are frequent.
  • Rain. Douala is one of the wettest cities in Africa, especially from June to October.
  • One ticket. Book Accra to Douala on one ticket, so the airline must rebook you if you miss the connection.

Coming the other way: from Cameroon to Ghana

Cameroonians visiting Ghana should check the Ghana visa rules before travel. Cameroonians interested in their own German colonial history will find the same story on Ghana's side in the Volta Region, which was German Togoland.

Airport pickup with free internet, private vehicle hire and a three-destination tour, booked before you land. Entrance fees are included in the tour price; tips are not included but always welcome.
