Kigali from Accra: Africa's cleanest capital, three flights a week away

Kigali surprises almost everyone: hills covered in green, streets without plastic bags, motorbike taxis whose riders hand you a helmet, and a city that has turned the memory of the 1994 genocide into a determination to build something better. From Accra it is one RwandAir flight, three times a week, and Ghanaians need no visa. Here is how to get there, what to see, and how Kigali opens the door to the gorillas and to the rest of East Africa.

Why six hours?

Ghana and Kigali right now

Local time in both cities, the weather at this moment, and a converter between cedis, Rwandan francs and the main currencies.

Say it in Kinyarwanda

  • Muraho: hello.
  • Amakuru? How are you? The answer is Ni meza, I'm fine.
  • Murakoze: thank you.
  • Yego / Oya: yes / no.

Kigali sits at about 1,500 metres, so it is far cooler than Accra: warm days and fresh evenings. Bring a light jacket.

Entry and arrival

  • No visa for Ghanaians: Rwanda allows citizens of all African countries to enter without a visa. Bring a passport valid for at least six months.
  • Yellow fever: carry your vaccination card; it may be checked.
  • Plastic bags are banned: Rwanda has outlawed single-use plastic bags. Pack in other bags; plastic may be taken away at the airport.
  • Into town: taxis and ride-hailing run from the airport to the city in 20 to 30 minutes. Many hotels offer pickups.

Kigali: what to see

  • Kigali Genocide MemorialAt Gisozi, where more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi are buried. The essential first visit.
  • Kimironko MarketKigali's busiest market: fabrics, baskets, fruit and tailors who sew in a day.
  • NyamiramboThe city's liveliest, most Muslim quarter, with walking tours run by local women.
  • Art galleries and cafésA young creative scene, and some of Africa's best coffee grown on Rwanda's hills.

Beyond Kigali

  • Volcanoes National ParkMountain gorilla trekking in the Virunga volcanoes, about two and a half hours from Kigali. Permits are expensive and limited; book months ahead.
  • Akagera National ParkSavannah safari in the east, with the Big Five, boat trips and hot-air balloon flights.
  • Nyungwe ForestMontane rainforest in the south-west, with chimpanzees and a canopy walkway.
  • Lake KivuBeaches and lakeside towns on the border with DR Congo.

Rwanda's top tours: gorilla trekking, hot-air balloon flights, Kigali city tours and airport pickups. Entrance fees are included in the tour price; tips are not included but always welcome.

Kigali as a gateway

RwandAir's hub connects Kigali with much of East and Central Africa. From Accra, Kigali is the easiest stepping stone.

Honest tips for Rwanda

  • Umuganda: on the last Saturday of every month, the whole country does community work from about 8 to 11 in the morning. Shops close and traffic stops; plan around it.
  • Gorilla permits: they cost far more than in most places in Africa and sell out. Book through an operator well in advance, or look at Uganda as a cheaper alternative.
  • Moto taxis: cheap and everywhere. Riders carry a second helmet; wear it.
  • Remembrance: April is the national period of mourning for the genocide. Visitors are welcome, but some events and nightlife are muted.
  • Rules are enforced: traffic, littering and the plastic ban are taken seriously. It is part of why Kigali works.
  • Mind the clock: Kigali is two hours ahead of Accra. Check whether your ticket shows local times.
