Flights from Accra to Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar

Accra and Dar es Salaam lie on opposite coasts of the same continent, one on the Atlantic, one on the Indian Ocean, and no airline flies between them nonstop. With one change in Nairobi, Addis Ababa or Kigali you are there the same day, and Zanzibar is only a short hop further. The two countries share more than an ocean-to-ocean flight path: Kwame Nkrumah and Julius Nyerere built the idea of a united Africa together. Here are the routes, the entry rules, and what Tanzania holds beyond the safari brochures.

The best one-stop routes from Accra

Flight times are approximate, without the connection. Tanzania is three hours ahead of Ghana all year. All three African hubs below need no transit visa if you stay airside.

Which one to pick

Quickest: Kenya Airways via Nairobi, the shortest second leg, or Ethiopian via Addis Ababa, which has the most frequencies from Accra, up to three a day from December 2026. For Zanzibar: book straight through to Zanzibar on one ticket rather than flying to Dar and taking the ferry, unless you want the two-hour crossing. The Gulf routes double back on themselves and only make sense on a very good fare.

Say it in Swahili

Swahili is spoken by almost everyone in Tanzania, and a greeting matters more than anywhere in West Africa.

  • Jambo / Habari?: hello / how are you? The answer is Nzuri, fine.
  • Shikamoo: the respectful greeting to an elder. They answer Marahaba.
  • Asante / Asante sana: thank you / thank you very much.
  • Karibu: welcome. You will hear it everywhere.
  • Bei gani?: how much is it?
  • Pole pole: slowly, slowly. The Tanzanian answer to every hurry.
  • Hakuna matata: no problem. Yes, it is real Swahili.

Tanzania in brief

Key facts

  • Capital: Dodoma, the official capital since 1996. Dar es Salaam is the largest city and commercial centre, and most embassies are still there.
  • Independence: Tanganyika on 9 December 1961 from Britain; Zanzibar in December 1963; the union as Tanzania on 26 April 1964.
  • Currency: Tanzanian shilling (TZS). US dollars are widely used for safaris and park fees; bring clean notes printed after 2009.
  • Languages: Swahili and English.
  • Time: East Africa Time, UTC+3, three hours ahead of Ghana.
  • Entry for Ghanaians: Ghanaian passport holders have been visa-exempt for short visits; confirm on Tanzania's official immigration website before you travel, as rules change.
  • Entry for UK, EU and US passports: a visa is needed, best applied for online through the official e-visa portal before travel.
  • Yellow fever: a certificate is required for travellers arriving from Ghana, which is a yellow fever country. Carry your card.
  • Zanzibar: part of Tanzania but semi-autonomous, with its own immigration check and a compulsory travel insurance for visitors. Check the current rules.

Nkrumah, Nyerere, and the Germans who came first

When Ghana became independent in 1957, Julius Nyerere was a teacher leading Tanganyika's independence movement. He watched Accra closely. Four years later Tanganyika was free, and Nyerere and Kwame Nkrumah became the two great voices of African unity, though they disagreed sharply on how fast it should come. Nkrumah wanted one government for Africa at once; Nyerere argued for building it region by region. Both helped found the Organisation of African Unity in Addis Ababa in 1963.

Tanzania and Ghana also share a German chapter. Dar es Salaam was the capital of German East Africa, as Lomé was of German Togo, which reached into today's Volta Region. In 1905 the Maji Maji rising against German forced cotton growing spread across the south of the colony; the German response, including deliberate famine, killed many tens of thousands of people. The colonial buildings of the old German quarter near the harbour still stand.

Dar es Salaam and beyond: what to see

  • Kariakoo MarketEast Africa's great market, Dar es Salaam's answer to Makola. Hot, crowded, unmissable.
  • National Museum and the old townHuman origins from Olduvai, the German quarter and the Askari Monument.
  • Zanzibar Stone TownThe UNESCO old town, and the Anglican cathedral built on the site of the last open slave market of East Africa.
  • Serengeti and NgorongoroThe great migration and the crater, reached by flight or road from Arusha.
  • KilimanjaroAfrica's highest mountain, climbed in five to nine days, with a licensed guide only.
  • Nyerere National ParkThe former Selous, one of Africa's largest parks, closest to Dar es Salaam.

Arriving at Julius Nyerere International Airport

  • The airport: Julius Nyerere International (DAR), about 12 kilometres south-west of the city centre. International flights use Terminal 3.
  • Immigration: have your yellow fever card ready with your passport, plus a return ticket and your address in Tanzania.
  • Into town: official airport taxis, or ride-hailing apps, which are usually cheaper. Agree any taxi fare before you get in.
  • Traffic: Dar's traffic is heavy. Allow an hour to the centre at peak times.
  • To Zanzibar: a 20-minute flight, or the fast ferry from the port in about two hours.

Honest tips for this route

  • Yellow fever card. Without it you may be refused entry or vaccinated at the airport. Check your card before you leave Accra.
  • Dollars for safaris. Park fees and many lodges are priced in US dollars. Old or torn notes are often refused.
  • Safari prices. Tanzania's parks are expensive: the fees alone can be over USD 70 a person a day. Budget honestly.
  • Zanzibar is conservative. Cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town, especially during Ramadan.
  • Malaria. As in Ghana, it is everywhere on the coast. Take your prophylaxis and nets seriously.
  • One ticket. Book Accra to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar on one ticket, so the airline must rebook you if you miss the connection.

Coming the other way: from Tanzania to Ghana

Tanzanians visiting Ghana should check the Ghana visa rules before travel. The same routes via Nairobi, Addis Ababa or Kigali run in reverse. Visitors from the Indian Ocean coast will find the Atlantic forts a striking contrast to Zanzibar: the same trade in people, the other side of the continent.

Airport pickup with free internet, private vehicle hire and a three-destination tour, booked before you land. Entrance fees are included in the tour price; tips are not included but always welcome.
