Flights from Accra to Houston: Ghana's road to Texas

Houston is America's fourth-largest city, its oil capital and one of its most diverse places. It is home to a growing Ghanaian community, with churches, associations and restaurants from Alief to Katy. The oil companies that found and pump Ghana's offshore fields have offices here. Down the road in Galveston, the news of freedom reached the last enslaved people of Texas on 19 June 1865: the day now celebrated across the United States as Juneteenth. There is no nonstop from Accra, but one change in Washington or New York gets you to Houston the same day.

The best one-stop routes from Accra

Flight times are approximate, without the connection. Houston is six hours behind Ghana in winter and five in American summer time. You clear US immigration at your first American airport.

Which one to pick

The natural choice: United via Washington Dulles. United flies Accra–Dulles and has its largest hub in Houston, so the whole trip is on one airline, with plenty of onward flights. The alternative: Delta via New York JFK, daily from Accra. Allow at least three hours to connect in either city: you clear immigration and customs, re-check your bags and go through security again.

Talk like a Texan

English, of course, and in Houston a lot of Spanish too. Texas has its own way with words.

  • Howdy: hello. Still used, and not only by cowboys.
  • Y'all: you, plural. "Y'all coming?"
  • Fixin' to: about to. "I'm fixin' to leave."
  • The Loop: Interstate 610, the ring road around central Houston. "Inside the Loop" means the centre.
  • Hola / Gracias: hello / thank you in Spanish, the city's second language.

The US visa and Texas in brief

Key facts

  • Capital of the USA: Washington, D.C. The capital of Texas is Austin, not Houston.
  • Currency: US dollar (USD). Cards and contactless payment work everywhere.
  • Time: Central Time, UTC−6 in winter and UTC−5 in summer: six or five hours behind Ghana.
  • Entry for Ghanaians: a B1/B2 visitor visa, applied for with the DS-160 form and an interview at the US Embassy in Accra. Ghana is not in the Visa Waiver Program.
  • Entry for UK and most EU passports: ESTA online before travel.
  • Where you enter: at your first US airport, Washington or New York, not in Houston, unless you fly in directly from Europe or the Gulf.
  • Plugs: flat two-pin (types A and B), 110 volts. Bring an adapter, and check that your devices handle the voltage.

The US visa in plain words

Ghanaian Houston

Texas has one of the fastest-growing Ghanaian communities in the United States, centred on Houston and the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Many first came as students or oil and gas engineers; others followed family. You find the community in Ghanaian and Pentecostal churches across the south-west suburbs, at African groceries selling gari, shito and frozen tilapia, at Ghanaian restaurants, and at the big gatherings for Independence Day in March and for funerals, where the kente comes out. For a newcomer, the church is usually the fastest way in.

Juneteenth and oil: Houston's two Ghana stories

On 19 June 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, an hour south of Houston, and announced that the enslaved people of Texas were free. Freed people in Houston later pooled their money to buy land for an annual celebration: Emancipation Park, opened in 1872, still stands in the Third Ward. Juneteenth became a national holiday in 2021. For African Americans whose ancestors passed through forts like Cape Coast and Elmina, it closes the circle.

The second story is oil. When Ghana's Jubilee field was discovered offshore in 2007, American oil companies, several based in or around Houston, were among the partners. Engineers, consultants and service companies have shuttled between Takoradi and Houston ever since.

Arriving at George Bush Intercontinental

  • The airports: George Bush Intercontinental (IAH), about 35 kilometres north of downtown, handles international and United flights. William P. Hobby (HOU), south of the centre, is mainly domestic.
  • Arriving from Washington or New York: you are a domestic passenger, already through immigration, and walk straight to baggage claim.
  • Into town: ride-hailing apps and taxis are the usual choice; METRO bus 102 runs to downtown for a fraction of the price but takes over an hour.
  • Car hire: Houston is enormous and built for cars. For anything beyond downtown and the Museum District, you will want one.

Honest tips for this route

  • Connection time. At least three hours at Dulles or JFK: immigration, customs and re-checking bags take time.
  • Hurricane season. June to November. Storms can close the airports and flood the city. Check the forecast and your travel insurance.
  • The heat. Houston summers are hot and very humid, often above 35 °C. Air conditioning everywhere means you will need a jacket indoors.
  • Distances. The metro area is larger than many countries. A "short drive" can be an hour.
  • Tipping. Expected: 18 to 20 per cent in restaurants, more for good service.
  • Health insurance. American medical bills are among the highest in the world. Do not travel without travel health insurance.
