Conakry from Accra: Guinea, the country that said "No", and Nkrumah's second home

In 1958 Guinea became the only French colony to vote "No" to de Gaulle and take immediate independence. Ghana, independent for barely a year, answered at once: Kwame Nkrumah offered a union between the two countries and a loan to keep Guinea afloat. Eight years later, overthrown at home, Nkrumah found refuge in Conakry, where he lived until his final illness. Few capitals are more closely tied to Ghana's own story. Here is how to get there today, and what waits for you in Guinea.

A few words for Guinea

  • Bonjour / Merci (French): hello / thank you, understood everywhere.
  • I nu wali (Susu): greeting heard in Conakry.
  • On jaraama (Pular): thank you, in the Fouta Djallon.

Conakry is one of the wettest capitals in Africa: the rainy season, roughly June to September, brings very heavy downpours. November to April is the dry and best time to travel.

Entry and arrival

  • Entry for Ghanaians: Guinea applies the ECOWAS free-movement rules, so Ghanaians are generally admitted without a visa for short stays. Guinea's political status within ECOWAS has changed since 2021, so check the current rule before you travel.
  • Yellow fever: a vaccination certificate is required.
  • Into town: the airport is inside the city, but Conakry's traffic on its single long peninsula is heavy. Agree taxi fares first, or arrange a hotel pickup.
  • Money: carry cash. Cards work in few places; change money at banks or official bureaux.

Ghana and Guinea: Nkrumah's second home

When Guinea rejected de Gaulle's proposed French Community in the referendum of September 1958, France withdrew almost overnight, taking administrators, money and equipment with it. Ghana stepped in. In November 1958 Kwame Nkrumah and Guinea's leader Ahmed Sékou Touré announced the Ghana–Guinea Union, the first step towards Nkrumah's dream of a united Africa, and Ghana lent Guinea money to survive its first months. Mali joined later, and the union became the forerunner of the pan-African institutions to come.

In February 1966, while Nkrumah was abroad, he was overthrown in Ghana. Sékou Touré invited him to Conakry and made him honorary co-president of Guinea. Nkrumah spent his last active years there, writing and broadcasting, until he left for medical treatment in Bucharest, where he died in 1972. His body was brought back first to Conakry, then home to Ghana, where he now rests in Accra.

The darker side

Sékou Touré's long rule also had a brutal side. At Camp Boiro in Conakry thousands of real and imagined opponents were imprisoned, and many died. Any honest visit to Conakry's history includes both stories.
