Ouagadougou from Accra: Ghana's northern neighbour, honestly

Burkina Faso begins where Ghana's Upper East Region ends. The same peoples live on both sides of the border, the same trucks carry goods between Tema and the Sahel, and the Mossi kings of Ouagadougou trace their origin to a princess from Gambaga. Ouagadougou, the capital, is Africa's film city and a centre of crafts and music. It is also the capital of a country facing a serious security crisis. This page tells you how to get there, what you will find, and what you need to know before you go.

Safety first

Read this before you plan anything

Since the mid-2010s, armed groups have carried out attacks across large parts of Burkina Faso, especially in the north, east and border regions. Many governments advise their citizens against all travel to much of the country, and against all but essential travel to the rest, including Ouagadougou. The country has been under military rule since 2022.

Many Ghanaians still travel to Ouagadougou for trade, family and work, and life in the capital goes on. But road travel outside the capital can be dangerous, and conditions change quickly. Check the current advice of your government, follow local news, and travel only with people who know the situation on the ground.

A few words for Burkina

  • Bonjour / Merci (French): hello / thank you.
  • Ne y windiga (Mooré): good afternoon.
  • Barka (Mooré): thank you.

Ouagadougou is hot and dry for most of the year. March to May can pass 40 °C; the Harmattan from December to February brings dust and cool nights. The short rainy season runs from about June to September.

Entry and arrival

  • Burkina Faso and ECOWAS: together with Mali and Niger, Burkina Faso left ECOWAS in January 2025 and formed the Alliance of Sahel States. Both sides announced that visa-free movement for West Africans would continue for now. Check the current rule for a Ghanaian passport before you travel.
  • Yellow fever: a vaccination certificate is required.
  • Paga border: the main crossing from Ghana. Expect thorough checks on both sides; carry your passport, yellow fever card and any vehicle papers.
  • Airport transfers: the airport is close to the city centre. A pre-booked pickup is the easiest option.

Ghana and Burkina: one land, two countries

  • Princess Yennenga: the founding legend of the Mossi kingdoms tells of Yennenga, a warrior princess from the royal house of Gambaga in today's North East Region of Ghana. Her son Ouédraogo is remembered as the ancestor of the Mossi kings, among them the Moro Naba of Ouagadougou.
  • The Kassena: the people of Paga and Navrongo live on both sides of the border. The famous painted houses of Tiébélé in Burkina and of Sirigu in Ghana come from the same tradition.
  • Trade: Tema port is one of Burkina Faso's main gateways to the sea. Many of the trucks you see on Ghana's northern roads are heading there.

Honest tips for Burkina Faso

  • Fly rather than drive if you are not used to the region. The road from Paga to Ouagadougou is the one to check most carefully before every trip.
  • Stay in the capital: most visitors today keep to Ouagadougou. Trips beyond it should be planned with local people who know the current situation.
  • Register and stay informed: tell your embassy you are in the country, keep your phone charged, and follow local news.
  • Photography: do not photograph soldiers, police, government buildings or checkpoints.
  • Heat: from March to May the heat is extreme. Drink plenty and plan outings for the morning and evening.
  • French helps: English is little spoken. Basic French, or a few words of Mooré, open doors.
