Frankfurt is Germany's banking capital, the seat of the European Central Bank, and the home of the country's biggest airport, the hub of Lufthansa and one of the busiest in Europe. For many Ghanaians, Frankfurt is where they change planes for the rest of Germany, Eastern Europe or beyond, and that is exactly where the transit-visa trap lies. For others it is the destination: the Rhine-Main region has a sizeable Ghanaian community. No airline flies nonstop from Accra, but more airlines connect to Frankfurt than to any other German city.

Which one to pick

Fastest: Brussels Airlines via Brussels, part of the Lufthansa Group, with frequent short hops to Frankfurt and onward Lufthansa connections on the same ticket. KLM via Amsterdam is just as quick. No transit visa: Turkish via Istanbul or Royal Air Maroc via Casablanca. By train is also an option: from Brussels, the ICE high-speed train reaches Frankfurt in about three hours.

The Frankfurt transit trap

Frankfurt is a Schengen airport, and Germany applies the same rules as the rest of Schengen: Ghanaians changing planes here, for example from Accra via Frankfurt to Toronto or Moscow, normally need an airport transit visa, even without leaving the airport. Holders of a valid US, Canadian, UK or Schengen visa, or a residence permit from one of these countries, are exempt. Every year, travellers with cheap tickets via Frankfurt are refused boarding in Accra for lack of one. Check before you book; the German Embassy in Accra issues transit visas.

If Frankfurt is your destination and you hold a German Schengen visa, there is no problem: you enter Schengen at your first European airport and continue normally.

Ghanaians in the Rhine-Main region

After Hamburg, the Rhine-Main area around Frankfurt, Offenbach, Darmstadt and Wiesbaden is home to one of the larger Ghanaian communities in Germany. Many came in the 1980s; their children are now German-Ghanaian professionals, many working at the airport, in logistics, care work and the banks. You find the community in Ghanaian and Pentecostal churches, at African shops near the Hauptbahnhof and in Offenbach, and at the big festivals and funerals that bring families together from across Germany. For Ghanaians arriving in Frankfurt, the church is usually the fastest way in.

Half an hour west by S-Bahn, Wiesbaden, the elegant spa town and capital of Hesse, has the grand Kurhaus, thermal baths and a casino where Dostoevsky once gambled. Beyond it, the Rhine Gorge between Rüdesheim and Koblenz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of castles and vineyards, is best seen from a river boat. Heidelberg, with its castle ruins and old university, is about an hour south.

Arriving at Frankfurt Airport

  • The airport: Frankfurt Airport (FRA), about 12 kilometres south-west of the city, with Terminals 1 and 2 linked by the SkyLine train, and the new Terminal 3 coming into service.
  • Into town: S-Bahn lines S8 and S9 run from the regional station under Terminal 1 to the Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes.
  • Onward by train: the airport has its own long-distance station, with ICE high-speed trains to Cologne, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and beyond.
  • Taxi: from the ranks outside arrivals, about 20 to 30 minutes to the centre.

Honest tips for this route

  • Transit visa. If Frankfurt is only a stop, check whether you need an airport transit visa before you buy the ticket.
  • The station quarter. The Bahnhofsviertel around the Hauptbahnhof has a visible drug scene. It is busy and mostly safe by day, but stay alert at night, and do not book a hotel there without reading reviews.
  • Trade fairs. During the Book Fair in October and other big fairs at the Messe, hotel prices in Frankfurt multiply. Check the fair calendar before you book.
  • Cash and Sundays. Carry some euros, and remember that most shops are closed on Sundays.
  • Deutsche Bahn. German trains are often late. Leave a buffer for onward connections.
  • Food parcels. Meat, fish and dairy products cannot be brought into the EU from outside. Dried fish will be taken at customs.

Coming the other way: from Frankfurt to Ghana

German visitors need a Ghana visa before travel. Frankfurt is a common starting point for Germans flying to Ghana, usually via Brussels or Amsterdam. For travellers interested in Germany's own history in Ghana, the Volta Region and the German fort at Princes Town are well worth the trip.
