Uyo from Accra: a nonstop flight into Nigeria's quiet south-east

Until May 2026 nobody flew from Ghana to Akwa Ibom without changing planes in Lagos. Now Ibom Air, the state's own airline, flies Accra to Uyo nonstop twice a week, in about an hour and a half. It is the first international route in the state's history, and it opens a part of Nigeria most Ghanaians have never seen: green, orderly Uyo, the long Atlantic beaches at Ibeno, some of Nigeria's most famous cooking, and the old trading city of Calabar just across the river.

Honest tips for Akwa Ibom

  • Twice a week only: plan your trip around Thursday and Sunday. If you miss the flight, the backup is via Lagos.
  • Small aircraft: Ibom Air flies the CRJ900 regional jet. Cabin space is tight; larger cabin bags may be checked at the door.
  • Mind the clock: Uyo is one hour ahead of Accra. Check whether your ticket shows local times.
  • Travel by day: road travel in the Niger Delta region is best done in daylight, with a known driver.
  • Check current advice: look at travel advisories for the south-east and the Delta before you go, and follow local advice once there.
  • December: combine Uyo with the Calabar Carnival, but book flights and hotels early.
