Etihad to Accra in March 2027 – and the Africa World Airlines Deal

Flight news · Coming in 2027 · 7 November 2026
In March 2027 a second Gulf giant arrives in Accra. Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, will fly Abu Dhabi–Accra four times a week. Before its first aircraft has landed, it has already signed a partnership with Ghana's own Africa World Airlines. One detail is still unclear: the exact date.
The route in brief
Etihad Airways · Abu Dhabi ⇄ Accra
- Start: March 2027. Etihad's April 2026 network announcement gave 17 March 2027. The Etihad–Africa World Airlines statements of July 2026 speak of 24 March 2027. Check the date when you book.
- Frequency: four flights a week.
- Aircraft: Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
- Hub: Zayed International Airport, Abu Dhabi (AUH), with onward connections to more than 100 destinations.
- Sales agent in Ghana: Total Air Alliance Limited, part of the GHI Assets Group, under a letter of intent signed in Accra.
- Part of a bigger push: six new African routes. Asmara started on 7 November 2026; Accra, Lagos, Kinshasa, Harare and Lubumbashi follow in March 2027.
The Africa World Airlines deal
On 24 July 2026 Etihad and Africa World Airlines (AWA), the Accra-based airline that has carried most of Ghana's domestic passengers for more than a decade, signed a memorandum of understanding. It covers interline and codeshare, cargo, and the two frequent-flyer programmes. It will be introduced in phases, and combined tickets go on sale only once each part is in place.
For travellers, this could matter more than the Abu Dhabi flight itself. Once it works, a passenger in Kumasi, Tamale or Takoradi could book one ticket to Abu Dhabi and beyond, with bags checked through, on AWA to Accra and Etihad onwards. The AWA network named in the deal also includes Lagos, Abuja and Ouagadougou.
Why it matters
- Gulf competition. Emirates has just gone to 11 flights a week and Qatar flies Doha. A third Gulf carrier usually means lower fares to Asia and the Middle East.
- The North finally connects. The AWA link could put Tamale and Kumasi one ticket away from India, China and the Gulf.
- The national airline question. When Etihad first notified the government, the Transport Minister invited it to look at partnering in the revival of Ghana's national airline. Nothing has come of that publicly yet, but it is worth watching.
Honest tips
- Don't book tight around the launch. With two different start dates in official statements, keep plans flexible for the first weeks of the route.
- Codeshare is not yet live. Until the AWA–Etihad interline is in place, an AWA domestic flight and an Etihad flight are two separate tickets, so leave a long gap in Accra.
- Abu Dhabi visas: as with Dubai, staying airside needs no visa, but entering the UAE does for Ghanaian passport holders.
