Ghana Airways Relaunch: Where It Really Stands in November 2026

Flight news · Ghana · 7 November 2026

"Before I leave office." With those words, spoken in Moscow on 27 October 2026, President John Dramani Mahama quietly moved the finishing line for Ghana's new national airline. Until then, the official target had been the first quarter of 2027. Here is where the project really stands, what has been promised, and what is still missing.

What was said in Moscow

Mahama was in Russia for the third Russia–Africa Summit and received an honorary doctorate from the Russian University of Transport. There he said that Ghana is working on rebuilding its "cherished national airline" and that he hopes to see it back in the air before his term ends. Mahama's term runs until January 2029. One Ghanaian daily headlined the speech as "national airline to be operational in 2028". That may be reading too much into it, but it shows how the story is now being heard at home.

How the timeline has moved

From task force to "before I leave office"

  • May 2025: a 10-member national airline task force is inaugurated to plan fleet, staff and routes.
  • December 2025: Mahama revives the plan publicly and promises a transparent search for a "competent" partner, after the previous government's Ashanti Airlines deal collapsed in 2024.
  • January 2026: Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe says the airline will fly within 12 months.
  • April 2026: the government invites a majority private investor, with first operations "no later than the first quarter of 2027".
  • 1 June 2026: Mahama pitches the airline to investors at the Ghana–UK Investment Summit in London.
  • September 2026: after talks with Boeing executives, the projection becomes "within 18 months", provided the right structures are in place.
  • October 2026: Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says the technical committee has submitted its report and that the airline would carry the Ghana Airways name, still aiming for 2027.
  • 27 October 2026: in Moscow, the target becomes "before I leave office".

What is still missing

As of early November 2026, no operating partner, no fleet plan, no funding structure and no firm launch date have been made public. A name and a committee report are a start, but an airline needs aircraft, an Air Operator Certificate from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, trained crews, slots and, above all, money that can absorb years of losses on long-haul routes.

Do not confuse the project with Air Ghana, the private cargo airline that took delivery of a Boeing 737-400 freighter in May 2026. It has no link to the state-backed national carrier.

Why Ghana is right to be cautious

Ghana has been here twice before. Ghana Airways flew from 1958, the year after independence, until it collapsed under debt in 2004. Its successor, Ghana International Airlines, lasted from 2005 to 2010. Then came the Ashanti Airlines partnership, announced in 2022, which never got off the ground. Each time, the problem was not the idea but the money and the management. Our page The Art of Failure: Ghana Airways tells that story honestly.

Meanwhile the market has not waited. Five new airlines joined Accra in 2026 alone, from Air Tanzania to Uganda Airlines, and Etihad arrives in March 2027. A new Ghana Airways would be entering one of the most crowded and competitive airports in West Africa.

Our verdict

The political will is real and the name is chosen. But until a partner, aircraft and an operating licence are announced, any date is a hope, not a schedule. We track every step on our Ghana Airways 2027 tracker.
