Toronto–Accra Postponed: Still No Nonstop Flight Between Ghana and Canada

Flight news · Canada · 7 November 2026
It was meant to be historic: the first nonstop flight between Canada and Ghana. In November 2025 Air Transat announced Toronto–Accra for summer 2026. By late March 2026 the flights had disappeared from sale, before a single one had flown. Toronto's large Ghanaian community still has to change planes. Here is what happened, what might still come, and how to fly between the two countries today.
What was announced, and what happened
Air Transat Toronto ⇄ Accra, the plan
- Announced: 20 November 2025.
- Planned season: 17 June to 22 October 2026, twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays.
- Aircraft: Airbus A330-200.
- Removed: taken out of Air Transat's schedule in a March 2026 update.
- Air Transat's statement: the route was postponed for "operational and commercial considerations", and the airline still intends to add Accra "at a later date". No new date has been given.
Why it failed is easy to see. Toronto–Accra is a long, thin route. Demand is strong in summer and around Christmas, and weak in between. It depends heavily on diaspora travel in one direction, with little feed from other flights. Add the 2026 jump in fuel prices and Ghana's new US$100 departure levy, and a seasonal twice-weekly service on a wide-body becomes a hard sum to make work.
What else is on the horizon
- RwandAir has revived plans for Kigali–Accra–New York, subject to US approval. It would serve the US, not Canada, but would add another North American option from Accra.
- South African Airways has said it wants to fly Cape Town via Accra to the US East Coast, but has warned of delays over aircraft availability and regulation. Nothing is on sale.
- Air Transat says Accra is still on its wish list. Until a new date is filed, treat it as a hope.
How to fly Ghana–Canada now
The main one-stop routes from Accra
- Via Europe: British Airways via London, KLM via Amsterdam, Brussels Airlines via Brussels, TAP via Lisbon, then on to Toronto or Montreal.
- Via Africa: Ethiopian via Addis Ababa, and Royal Air Maroc via Casablanca, which flies to Montreal.
- Via the US: Delta and United to New York, Atlanta or Washington, then a short hop to Canada. This needs a US visa even for transit.
- Via Istanbul: Turkish Airlines, often cheaper but longer.
- Visas: Ghanaian passport holders need a Canadian visitor visa, with biometrics, before travelling. Apply early: processing can take months in busy seasons.
- Transit rules: check the transit visa rules for your connecting country. The US needs a visa even if you never leave the airport, and the UK and Schengen countries have their own rules for some nationalities.
- Coming the other way: Canadians visiting Ghana have needed an approved e-visa or electronic travel authorisation since 25 May 2026, and a yellow fever certificate.
